Five Minute Friday· Holidays & Seasons

Snowflake Tic Tac Toe

With Christmas just a week away, I am excited about today’s Five Minute Friday tip, because it’s one that we’ll be able to enjoy throughout the winter season. As you may have noticed in past posts, we have a large tic tac toe board on our living room coffee table – a favorite of my boys – that is filled with the standard Xs and Os throughout much of the year. But I also enjoy switching things up for the holidays…

I bought this tic tac toe board at Z Gallerie a number of years ago… but recently I’ve spotted similar versions at other stores, including (affiliate links) Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and here.

A few years ago, I came across some small pumpkins at a craft store that I decided to paint gold and silver to replace the Xs and Os in our tic tac toe board for the fall. I loved how this simple change gave the game a new look, but still allowed us to play the coffee table game together as a family.

Of course, then I started thinking of all the other ways I could update our tic tac toe board for other seasons. Last year, I picked up some really inexpensive red and white plastic ornaments to use in place of our Xs and Os for the Christmas season, but I didn’t really like the way they looked. They were a bit oversized and when we tried to play, the extra round ornaments kept rolling off of the table, which was frustrating to the kids.
So this year I was in search of something new to use in our tic tac toe board that would be a bit more stylish and more functional. What I ended up finding were these pretty white glittery snowflake ornaments (affiliate link) in two different shapes. They fit perfectly in the squares of the game board, and I love that they will look nice in the living room throughout the winter, even after Christmas is over.

My boys love playing tic tac toe, but like all other toys, they tend to get bored and forget about it after a while, but by swapping out the standard Xs and Os for fun seasonal pieces, it gets them excited and ready to play all over again!
That’s all there is to it… more like a one minute project than a five minute project. It’s a small change that makes a big impact in our living room, and I’m already thinking of ways to update our tic tac toe board for the spring and summer.
