Five Minute Friday· Organizing

Dollar Store Storage with an Anthropologie Inspired Gold Basket

As you may recall, a few months ago I turned an old printer stand into a rolling bar cart – it was one of four furniture flips I did for my Drab to Fab feature at the Denver Home Show. I installed several wine glass racks below the painted “counter top,” but still had space to fill on the shallow shelf next to the glasses.

The goal was to complete my furniture makeovers on a tight budget, so I wanted to accessorize on the cheap as well.  I immediately envisioned a gold wire basket on the bar cart shelf, like this one from Anthropolgie (affiliate link), but obviously the price wasn’t right. Fortunately I was able to get the look for less with a quick and easy DIY.

I needed to find an inexpensive basket to transform, and my first stop was Dollar Tree. I couldn’t believe my luck when I immediately found a basket with a very similar shape to the Anthropolgie version. The neon green clearly wasn’t exactly the look I was after, but one dollar later I was on my way home with my spray paint finger eager to get to work.

I grabbed out a left over can of gold spray paint (affiliate link), and two light coats of paint later, the basket had a chic new high-end look.
I filled the basket with a dish towel and a wine bottle opener, and a few other bar tools and slid it onto the bar cart shelf.

The gold basket is a perfect compliment to the other gold accents on the bar cart – like the gold handles, wine rack, and stemware holders, all of which were also transformed with gold spray paint. There’s no doubt I had a theme going here… even the title of our favorite cocktail mix book (affiliate link) is shiny, pretty gold.

The other bar cart accessories – the champagne bucket, ice bucket, and black and white striped tray – were also quick and easy five minute DIYs, which were inspired by the ever stylish Kate Spade and created from simple household items.

Now that I know how chic a $1 plastic basket looks with a quick coat of gold spray paint, I’ll definitely be stocking up for future organizing projects!
