{decorating with style} Client Family Room Makeover Plans

I’ve been working on a few different clients projects lately – some decor and some organization – and I’m having the time of my life. I just love helping someone take a room or closet that isn’t working well for them and transforming it into a space that they can be proud of and that improves the way they live in their home. And of course, just like in all the projects I tackle in my own home, finding the right balance of style and function is always key!
Gray Carpet Selection for Family Room Design

One of the clients I am working with is a family with two young daughters, and I am currently helping them redecorate their entire main floor – including the entry, living room, dining room, family room, and kitchen. Today I want to give you a sneak peek at what we’re working on in the family room.

Let’s start with the before photos {and their sweet dog}…
The family liked their gray walls, but they were craving a lighter shade. They were undecided about whether to keep the brown couch. The couch is only a few years old and in good shape, but they wanted to bring some brighter colors into the space and weren’t sure that would work with the brown.
To the right of the couch, their daughters have an art table that they love and use daily, but mom and dad were hoping to find a more stylish solution, both for the table, and for their storage needs.

And then there’s the carpet. It has definitely seen better days!
In addition to being stained, the homeowners don’t love that the texture of the carpet seems to shows every footprint and wrinkle in a way that makes it look even dirtier than it really is.
We debated about whether to replace the carpet now or in the future when the kids are a bit older. But the reality is that kids will always be kids, and a dog will likely always be a member of the family, so we decided to replace their carpet now so long as we could find an affordable and durable option that would suit their lifestyle while giving the room an updated look.
This was the initial concept we came up with for the space:

We decided, in the interest of cost savings, to keep the brown couch for now, but to replace the end table and add a coffee table that would provide much needed storage for kids’ toys. We also plan to remove the single, skinny shelf in the niche above the couch, and find a way to make this space more of a feature.

The kids get to keep their “art corner,” but we’ll be replacing the table with a prettier version that can more easily seat both girls at the same time. Of course, all those plastic drawers just have to go, but we’ll be replacing it with plenty of storage for the girls art supplies and puzzles. These budding artists also deserve a place to display their masterpieces.

Once we had the basic design concept in place, we were ready to start shopping. I’m so excited to be partnering with Carpet One Floor & Home® to help this family find the perfect carpet to fit their busy lifestyle. It has to be soft for the girls to play, and it obviously has to be durable. The Relax, it’s…Lees carpet line is the perfect match for their requirements!
Shopping for Carpet at Carpet One
Relax, it’s…Lees is plush and soft, but also tough – offering both style and stain resistance, which is a major win-win for families! This carpet stands up to everyday life – the kids, the dog, the art work – by repelling spills to make cleanup quick and easy. If my clients are going to invest in new carpet, it has to look beautiful for years to come, and Carpet One and Relax, it’s…Lees literally guarantee it. Carpet One Floor & Home® offers The Beautiful Guarantee® {if your new flooring isn’t as beautiful as you dreamed, they’ll replace it free}, and Relax, it’s…Lees provides a 25 Year No Exclusions Warranty.

Shopping for the carpet at Carpet One Floor & Home®, I really appreciated the personal touch that comes with each store being locally owned. I had my three year old with me, and the store owner was so friendly and sweet with him! They even had a play area set up in the back to keep him happy so that I could concentrate on the carpet samples {talk about a family friendly way to do business!}.
My clients and I narrowed it down to four shades of gray carpet from the Heaven Sent and Angel Wings collections. We were able to check out four larger swatches to take back to their house so that we could see them in the room. Just like with picking paint, it’s so important to see the carpet in the light of the room that it will be installed in so that you can get an accurate sense of the color.

We laid the four samples next to the newly painted, light gray walls…

Choosing Gray Carpet
…and also next to the hardwood floors where the living room meets the family room. Comparing the carpet swatches to the paint and wood floor colors helped us to see how the finishes in the house brought out different undertones in the carpet. Some looked a bit more beige and others more gray in the space.
Comparing gray carpet swatches
In the end, we picked the lightest of the gray carpet samples {the top one in each of the photos above}. It’s called Heaven Sent Cinder Block, and I think it’s going to look great with the paint and accent colors that we’re planning for the room.
Picking a carpet to complement the family room design
I will be participating in the “Love it with Lees” Room Makeover Contest. In a few weeks, after the new carpet is installed, I will post photos of the completed room makeover. In that post, you’ll have a chance to enter to win a $500 Homegoods gift card by voting for my room at that time. If you’re not already on my email list, now is a great time to sign up so that you don’t miss out on the reveal post and your chance to win!
Here are some mock ups of what I have planned for the space. We are using the clients’ existing brown couch which is the same shape, but a slightly different style than the one in the rendering below. They asked for some bright colored accents to compliment the brown and gray, so we’ll be adding shades of yellow and teal to create a warm and cozy family room.

Photo rails above the couch will hold a combination of art and photographs, while keeping the display easy to update over time {similar to the photo rails in the inspiration photo}. And in the girls’ art space, a corner gallery {similar to the inspiration photo} will display their masterpieces above a new kid-sized table and chairs.

I can’t wait to see these plans come to life! I just know that the new carpet is going to be the element that grounds the entire design and makes the space feel fresh and new, as well as comfy and cozy.
