{one room challenge} Graphic Glam Master Bathroom Plans

  • Facebook
  • Twitter
It’s the start of another One Room Challenge … that wonderful {stressful} twice annual event that brings together a talented {completely crazy} group of design bloggers who challenge themselves to completely makeover one room in their house in just six weeks {err, it’s really just five weeks}.
I work best under a deadline, so the One Room Challenge is just the kick in the rear I need to take on a big project and finish it! That’s why I’m diving into the ORC for a fifth time to take on our master bathroom – the one room in our house that has receive the very least attention in the eight years we’ve lived here.

If you’re visiting Blue i Style for the first time from the One Room Challenge link party – welcome! I’m Angela, an attorney turned stay-at-home mom to two boys, ages 4 and 2.5. In my free time {what there is of it, anyway}, my passions are all things artistic, and my house is my palette. It’s a constant work in progress — decorating, organizing, DIYing, and generally making things pretty.
I love modern design, graphic patterns, and lots of color. But as you’ll see, our current master bathroom isn’t really any of those things! In fact, it’s rather plain and very beige.
Our house was brand new when we moved in, but we didn’t purchase it until it was already complete, so we didn’t have the opportunity to make any of the initial design decisions. The finishes in our master bathroom are fairly nice, but many of them are not really what I would have picked.
That’s not to say that there isn’t a lot to love. We have some great bones to work with. To start off, the bathroom is quite big.  I really like the cabinets {and all the storage they provide}, and I’m a big fan of our charcoal gray quartz countertop.

While I’m not totally smitten with the tile in the shower, I certainly can’t complain about the size or the dual shower heads. I thought I was going to love having a bench in the shower as well, but ours turns out to be too narrow to be useful. It’s too shallow to really sit on, but it does make a handy perch for leg shaving, so it’s got that going for it.

What do you say about a water closet? It’s really not much to look at. Which is unfortunate, because that is exactly what we look at from our bedroom. Yep, when I look into the bathroom from my bed, the toilet is the first thing I see. Awesome!

You might notice that we have a TV in the bathroom. Don’t judge me! I love to watch the news in the mornings, and sitcom reruns from the tub late at night. It’s also super nice to watch tv when sorting and putting away laundry. It may not be the prettiest thing to hang on our bathroom wall, but I’ve grown attached to it, so I have to find a way to work around it.

After sharing a very small closet in our prior home, having a walk-in closet with his and her sides is a huge bonus. But I’ll admit that for as much as I love to organize, my skills are not at their finest in our closet. In fact, you’ll often find piles of clothes covering every inch of it. And that makes the lack of a door at the entrance to the closet a bit unfortunate. Even more unfortunate is the fact that the closet is reflected in the giant mirror, so there’s no escaping the mess.

I know some people say they want a big tub, but then never really use it. That’s not me. I love my tub!

And that photo mural above the tub is my one and only genuine effort to make the space feel more like us in the past eight years. Before moving to this house, we lived in a condo in downtown Denver, and that was our view. It was hard to give up, so we decided to bring it with us! This mural project was really simple and super inexpensive, but it’s not hung as well as I would like. It doesn’t look too bad from this angle, but if you could see it from the side you’d realize how wonky those frames sit on the wall. The mural will be staying, but since I have to take it down to paint the walls, I get a second chance at hanging it the right way!

THE MOOD BOARD

Ok, so now that you’ve seen what the bathroom looks like now, let’s talk about where it’s headed in the next five weeks.

For the Fall 2014 One Room Challenge, I made over our master bedroom, and now I’m ready to finally bring some of that same style to the bathroom. Without further ado, here is a mood board that captures the style I’m going for…Graphic Glam.

THE TO DO LIST
I’ve been working on the detailed plans for about a month now, but I don’t want to give away too much before we even get started with the construction. Instead, I’ll give you a quick overview of what is changing and what will stay the same.
To start with – we aren’t removing any of the existing tile. As much as I’d love to replace it, it just doesn’t make sense to spend the money to rip it out and start from scratch. The cabinets and counter will also stay the same.
But the massive mirror, and the lights above it have to go, and that wall will then become the focal point of the room! We will be covering it in a graphic tile, adding framed mirrors, and hanging new lights from the ceiling. I’d really like to replace the faucets with a more modern version, but I’m not sure just yet if that will make the final cut in the budget.
While we’re stuck with some beige tones in the tile, I’m banishing the beige from the walls. We’ll be painting the bathroom the same color as our bedroom – a warm, light gray.
The water closet is going to get a little love with some tile on the walls, some shelves and some art. At least if there’s art on the walls we’ll have something other than the toilet to look at from our bedroom.
The mural will go back up above the tub, but sadly my dreams of a pretty light fixture above the tub have been dashed. Because of the height of our ceilings, it’s against code to have anything there other than a can light {insert sad face}. But I have plans that will {at least partially} make up for it. I would also like to add some shelves to the wall above the tub {below the lone window} for bubble bath and the like.
Lastly, I’ve go to address the lack of door on the closet. I have a few things in mind, but need to confirm the feasibility with a contractor. I’ll spill the beans on that {and what it may mean for my tv} as soon as I have the deets.
A SHOUT OUT TO MY SPONSORS
I’m so excited about the plans, but much of it would not be possible without the amazing group of sponsors I have lined up: LAMPS PLUS, MINTED, HOME RIGHT, and CEMENT TILE SHOP. You’ll be hearing more about each of them throughout the One Room Challenge, but I want to take a moment today to thank each of them!
CHECK OUT ALL OF THE OTHER ORC PLANS
Whew, I can’t wait to get started! The One Room Challenge is such a wonderful event, and of course all the props go to our host and fearless leader, Linda of Calling it Home. Be sure to check out all of the design plans of the 20 featured designers, as well as all of the other guest participants! There are so many amazing projects underway and I can’t wait to follow along with all of them!
I’ll definitely be sharing a lot of sneak peeks and progress shots on Facebook and Instagram, and I’ll be back each Thursday with an update leading up to the final reveal of our {soon to be completed} master bathroom on May 11th.
MY PAST ORC SPACES
If you are interested, you can also check out each of my prior One Room Challenge spaces: my son’s menswear inspired bedroom {complete with hand painted argyle wall}; our master bedroom; a rock & roll playroom under the basement stairs; and our laundry/linen closet.
