Modern Family Room Makeover with Hidden Toy Storage

What is everyone’s favorite part of decorating and DIY shows on tv? The big reveal at the end of course! That makes today an exciting day on the blog, because it’s reveal day!
A few weeks ago I showed you the before photos of a family room that I have been working on for some friends. We were so fortunate to partner with our sponsor, Carpet One Floor & Home®, on this project to make the plans a reality, and today I’m thrilled to show you how the family room has been transformed.

At the end of this post, there’s even a chance for you to win a $500 HomeGoods gift card to make over a room of your own, so I hope this family room update provides inspiration for a space you might want to tackle in your home!

Ok, since every good reveal needs a “BEFORE” – let’s start there. Let me remind you how this space looked just a few weeks ago:

The goal of the project was to help my clients – a family with two young daughters – achieve the perfect balance of style and function. They wanted the room to look more sophisticated while still providing a comfortable place for the kids to play, and they needed plenty of stylish storage for toys.

The old carpet had definitely seen better days! It was stained and wrinkled, but we really debated about whether to replace it since they have two young kids. We considered holding off on new carpet until the kids get a bit older, but when would be the right time? The reality is that kids will always be kids, so rather than waiting for life to change, we decided to find a stylish carpet option that would fit their lifestyle today. It would have to be soft for the girls to play, and it obviously would have to be durable. Thankfully we discovered that the Relax, it’s…Lees carpet line from Carpet One Floor & Home® was a perfect match for their needs!

We narrowed the carpet choices down to four shades of gray and created a design plan for the room. You can read all about the plans and my tips for choosing the perfect carpet color in my prior post about this family room.

And now, let me show you around the new and improved family room!

Family Room Makeover Brown Couch Gray Carpet Yellow Teal

We debated on whether to keep or replace the existing brown couch, but since it’s only a few years old and in good shape, we decided to work with it. We brightened up the space by putting a much lighter shade of gray on the walls, and then added lots of color in shades of teal and yellow.

The new gray carpet helps to balance out the dark brown couch, and combined with the light gray walls, it gives the space a much more modern look compared to the old tan carpet.

The pillows also do wonders for giving the brown couch a more modern and updated look! We picked a variety of textures and colors from HomeGoods to mix with pillows the family already owned.
On the wall above the couch we added two stainless steel picture rails for a combination of art and photos. The art ties in the colors of the room, and the photos make the space more personal. My favorite is the National Parks map in the pretty gold frame from HomeGoods. The homeowners spent a full year traveling to National Parks around the country before settling down and having kids, so this piece is a fun reminder of their adventures. It’s so important that your space not only be pretty, but also be a reflection of who you are and what you love!

In the corner niche above the couch, we removed the one skinny shelf and painted the back wall dark teal, which transforms this awkward inset into a feature. Scale was the key to making this space work, and we were able to find some tall, thin accessories from HomeGoods that were perfect for filling the height of the niche. Since groups of odd numbered items always work best, I paired two tall vases with the white ceramic hand, which I stacked on top of books to raise it up.

The old end table was functional, but didn’t add much to the style of the room. We replaced it with a white side table with gray-washed wood drawers, which is nice contrast against the dark couch. The drawers provide needed storage, and the top provides plenty of room for drinks and snacks.

Now let’s take a peak at the other side of the family room. Here’s a reminder of how it looked before.
Next to the couch, their daughters had an art table that they loved and used daily, but I wanted to give them a more stylish version.
We bought a really cute new kids’ table and chairs, and added a set of streamlined, charcoal gray drawers to store all of the girls coloring books, art supplies, and puzzles. The gray drawers also conveniently double as another end table.
I then selected a wide variety of picture frames and painted them all in the same shade of teal as the niche above the couch. Hung all together, these coordinating frames create a chic corner gallery to display the girls’ masterpieces. The boxes on top of the art table are another DIY project, and they keep the budding artists’ crayons, markers, and colored pencils stylishly contained. I’ll be sharing share some corner gallery wall tips, as well as the tutorial for the art supply boxes soon.

While the girls spend a lot of time drawing and coloring at the table, they’ll also need a comfortable place to play… which brings us back to the carpet. The kids {and therefore the parents} spend a lot of time down on the floor, so the carpet needed to be soft, but also durable! Fortunately, the Relax, it’s…Lees carpet line from Carpet One Floor & Home® was the perfect match for their requirements! And their Healthier Living® Flooring Installation System delivers antimicrobial protection that minimizes dust, and inhibits allergens, mold growth and odors – perfect for a family with young kids!
The new carpet is so plush and soft underfoot! Seriously, it’s made for bare feet! But the carpet is also going to be tough enough to stand up to all that this family will throw at it, including kids, dogs, food, and even art projects. This carpet will repel spills to make cleanup quick and easy, and Relax, it’s…Lees even provides a 25 Year No Exclusions Warranty.

The whole process of working with my local Carpet One Floor & Home® store was so easy – from selection all the way through installation. Each store is locally owned and operated, and I really appreciated the personal attention that they gave to our project. Best of all, if for any reason the new carpet hadn’t been as beautiful as my friends imagined, Carpet One Floor & Home® would have replaced it for free thanks to The Beautiful Guarantee®.
So now this family has plush and durable new carpet where they can play and enjoying spending time together. Which leads us to one last thing. Toy storage! Here’s the best kept secret in this room…
