{diy with style} How to Paint Cabinets with a Paint Sprayer

Tuesday, April 12, 2016

The One Room Challenge always pushes me to go big with my designs and to take on DIY projects that I've never attempted before. Right now, I'm working on our master bathroom makeover for the ORC, but last fall I redesigned our laundry closet and tried my hand at painting cabinets with a paint sprayer for the first time.

And - in another first - I created a video tutorial to show you how easy it is!

How to paint cabinets with paint sprayer

I had my heart set on bright green cabinet doors for the laundry room, but I wanted them to have a smooth and professional finish with zero brush strokes. I knew this would be the perfect opportunity for me to test out the FinishMax Paint Sprayer that my friends over at HomeRight had sent to me.

Normally I take photos of my DIY projects to create step by step photo tutorials, but given the nature of the paint sprayer, I thought it might be a lot easier to create a video to show you how it works.

I had planned to share this video with you back in the fall when we first shot it, but right as we were finishing up the cabinets, the video camera got dropped {whoops!} and wouldn't turn on. That meant the video was held hostage inside our non-functioning camera for a few months while it was sent out for {very slow} repairs. At long last, I'm ready to share the video tutorial with you {so don't mind the pumpkins on the porch, or the fact that I say I'm still working on the laundry room}.

This video covers everything you need to know to start and finish a project with a FinishMax Paint Sprayer - from set up and testing the sprayer, to thinning the paint and painting techniques.

I'll admit that I was nervous about using the FinishMax Paint Sprayer for the first time, but as you can see, it was seriously a piece of cake. I was able to get a smooth, professional looking finish on my cabinets, and it took less than 30 seconds to each side of the cabinet doors. You can't get much quicker than that!

I think the video covers everything that you'll need to know, but if you have a question, feel free to leave it in the comments below. I do know that some of you like to know paint colors, so I'll answer that now - I used Sherwin Williams Kilkenny (6740) on the cabinet doors.

Be sure to pin the image below so that you can find you way back to this video when you get ready for your first paint sprayer project!

  10. I have a gorgeous black dining table that we have in one of our vacation rentals. Over the course of 5 years though it was distressed already it has gone a bit beyond that. Also a guest this past month caused a white stain on the black...so if I won the sprayer I would use it to paint that!

    Thanks for the tips

  26. Fabulous job! Question: I’ve read several construction/painting blogs where they advise against caulking the seams on the panels mainly because of the wood expanding/contracting. Have you experienced any cracking/settling on your panels?

    1. Thanks, Matthew. I did not caulk any seams - I painted the cabinet doors just as they came from IKEA, and they are holding up great.
