I love a pretty tablescape, but, because of both budget and space, I don’t own a lot of different dishes. I have one basic set of square blue plates that we’ve used for every meal for the past 12 years. By getting a little creative and mixing in some of my inexpensive outdoor servingware, I was able to turn those dark navy plates into a bright and fresh spring table setting that is perfect for an Easter brunch.

Today I’ve joined with some of my blogging friends to show you our favorite ways to create simple spring and Easter inspired tablescapes by shopping your own home! Be sure to check out all the links at the end of this post for more gorgeously budget-friendly tables!

I’ve been swooning over springy, pastel dishes in all the stores lately…pretty much the opposite of our dark, square dinner plates. But I just can’t bring myself to buy new dishes for each season, and even if I wanted to, I really don’t have room for them in our already jam packed cabinets.

Instead, I started digging around to see what I could come up with to brighten up our table for spring. I grabbed out the inexpensive teal plastic plates that we use for barbecues, as well as our outdoor flatware, and the acrylic tumblers {affiliate link} that we use for on the patio. Teal is one of my favorite colors, and feels perfect for spring, so I was off to a good start. Don’t be afraid to mix in some of your outdoor dinnerware when setting your indoor dining table.

Next, I decided to add the set of inexpensive glass salad plates {affiliate link} that purchased back in the fall. I justified the purchase for my Thanksgiving table because I knew that I could use clear glass plates for any season or holiday. To brighten up my spring table plans, I decided to employ the same trick that I used for Thanksgiving, by adding a colorful piece of scrapbook paper below each glass salad plate.

I traced the bottom center of the plates onto four different colors of gold-flecked scrapbook paper…

…then quickly cut out the circles.

I stacked my teal patio plates on top of my square, navy dishes, and then layered each scrapbook paper circle below one of the glass plates, and voila! A totally new table setting look using items I already had on hand.

Last spring, I placed seven Pellegrino bottles down the center of my kitchen table, with one tall stem of faux cherry blossoms in each, and it was love at first sight! These upcycled vases added the height I wanted for a center piece, and had the perfect pop of color. I considered switching it up and doing something different this year, but I just couldn’t do it. I wanted to see those green bottle vases and pink flowers lining my table again this year! Here are 13 other household items that can be repurposed as beautiful vases for spring.

I used to think I had to choose between a tablecloth, a table runner, and placemats, but I’ve realized that I can mix and match them for a more layered and finished table. Mixing and matching also allows you to create lots of different table looks from just a few key pieces. For spring, I combined my teal placemats with my striped table runner {affiliate links}.

I’m so happy with how my spring table came together, and the fact that I didn’t have to buy anything new to pull it off. Here’s a summary of those four tips:

1. Don’t be afraid to mix in some of your outdoor dinnerware when setting your indoor dining table

2. Add a colorful scrapbook paper below clear glass salad plates to give your table a new look for each season

3. Repurpose household items, such as bottles, to create unique and free vases for real or fake flowers

4. Mix and match tablecloths, runners, and placemats, to create lots of different table looks

<img decoding="async" alt="Use Scrapbook paper for budget tablescape" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/BlueiStyle-Easter-Tablescape-Overhead.jpg" title="FOUR SIMPLE TIPS to create a beautiful and budget friendly table for spring and Easter by shopping you house and using what your already own.

With the pretty pastel colored scrapbook paper below the salad plates and the pink cherry blossoms, my table is now ready for Easter brunch!

With Christmas just a week away, I am excited about today’s Five Minute Friday tip, because it’s one that we’ll be able to enjoy throughout the winter season. As you may have noticed in past posts, we have a large tic tac toe board on our living room coffee table – a favorite of my boys – that is filled with the standard Xs and Os throughout much of the year. But I also enjoy switching things up for the holidays…

I bought this tic tac toe board at Z Gallerie a number of years ago… but recently I’ve spotted similar versions at other stores, including (affiliate links) Target, Bed Bath & Beyond, and here.

…but recently I’ve spotted similar versions at other stores (affiliate links):

A few years ago, I came across some small pumpkins at a craft store that I decided to paint gold and silver to replace the Xs and Os in our tic tac toe board for the fall. I loved how this simple change gave the game a new look, but still allowed us to play the coffee table game together as a family.

Of course, then I started thinking of all the other ways I could update our tic tac toe board for other seasons. Last year, I picked up some really inexpensive red and white plastic ornaments to use in place of our Xs and Os for the Christmas season, but I didn’t really like the way they looked. They were a bit oversized and when we tried to play, the extra round ornaments kept rolling off of the table, which was frustrating to the kids.

So this year I was in search of something new to use in our tic tac toe board that would be a bit more stylish and more functional. What I ended up finding were these pretty white glittery snowflake ornaments (affiliate link) in two different shapes. They fit perfectly in the squares of the game board, and I love that they will look nice in the living room throughout the winter, even after Christmas is over.

<img decoding="async" alt="Snowflake Tic Tac Toe Coffee Table Game" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/BlueiStyle-SnowflakeTicTacToe.jpg" title="Snowflake tic tac toe makes a perfect addition to the coffee table for Christmas and throughout the winter.

My boys love playing tic tac toe, but like all other toys, they tend to get bored and forget about it after a while, but by swapping out the standard Xs and Os for fun seasonal pieces, it gets them excited and ready to play all over again!

That’s all there is to it… more like a one minute project than a five minute project. It’s a small change that makes a big impact in our living room, and I’m already thinking of ways to update our tic tac toe board for the spring and summer.

The holidays should be a joyous time, full of family togetherness and fun, but all to often we let ourselves get stressed out by the shopping, decorating, cooking, and other items on our to do list. Today I’ve got three quick and easy organizing tips that will take the stress out of Christmas shopping!

SAVE MONEY BY NEVER FORGETTING YOUR COUPONS

I love this time of year when every retailer is mailing out coupons and my email inbox is bombarded with great deals, but it can get hard to keep track of. I have good intentions of grabbing the coupons I need before leaving the house on a shopping trip, but inevitably I end up making an unexpected stop at another store and I find myself in the check out line realizing that the coupon for that store is still on the kitchen counter.

Finally I came up with a quick and easy system to make sure I always have my coupons with me when I need them so that I can maximize my savings and avoid extra shopping trips! I picked up a cute, expanding receipt organizer that has become the perfect solution to organize my coupons, as well as my gift cards, in a portable manner. Best of all, it’s a convenient size to keep in my purse, so I have it with me at all times.

You can read all about this quick coupon organizing system in this post. I also use this same system to keep track of any gift cards that I receive as Christmas gifts.

CREATE A SHOPPING LIST YOU CAN ACCESS FROM ANYWHERE

I am notorious for jotting down notes on a million different scraps of paper and shoving them all in my pockets or purse as if I’ll ever be able to find the one I need when I need it. Obviously this is not the most efficient way to create a Christmas shopping list, so for the past few years I have been slowly forcing myself to switch to digital list making. I love both the Notes and Reminders apps on my iPhone for my to do lists, but when it came to creating a Christmas shopping list, I wanted to find a system where I could keep track of more details… enter Google Drive.

For the past few years, I have turned my shopping list into a spreadsheet using Google Sheets. With one quick download of the free Google Drive app, I can create my shopping list spreadsheet on my computer or tablet while flipping through catalogs, and then I can easily pull it up on my phone to reference it and update it when I am out shopping.

Here’s an example of my shopping spreadsheet from a few years ago:

I especially love this system when I’m shopping for the kids, because so many of the same toys and games are available at lost of different stores, but the prices and deals can vary widely! I like to start my sitting down with the stacks of catalogs that arrive in the mail and input the info for the items I’m interested in. And since a lot of those catalogs include discount codes or coupon offers on the cover, I add that info as well. Then if I find a better deal elsewhere, I can update the spreadsheet accordingly.

This is not only a great way to keep track of items that I might want to buy online, it also comes in handy when I’m out shopping. I always love to support local toy stores when possible, but I also need to stay on budget, so when I’m out and about, I pull up this shopping list on my phone so that I can quickly compare the in store sale prices to the online offers to make my purchasing decisions more efficient.

You can read a quick and easy tutorial for setting up a shopping list in Google Sheets in this post.

KEEP TRACK OF THE GIFTS YOU’VE PURCHASED

I always try to get a jump start on my Christmas shopping by picking up cute little items throughout the year that would make good gifts for friends and neighbors. And I frequently purchase items for my boys to put away for their birthdays and Christmas. I stash all of these gifts on the shelves in our guest room closet, along side my gift wrap supplies, but a closet full of gifts is no good if I can’t remember what I bought and for whom!

That’s why last year, I created a simple gift tracking system that made Christmas shopping and present wrapping so much less stressful!

I started by dressing up a clipboard and adding a handy DIY pocket to the bottom of it to store all my Christmas shopping receipts. Read my quick and easy clipboard pocket tutorial here.

Then I designed a printable checklist to keep track of the gifts I have purchased, the recipient, and the occasion. The “occasion” column comes in particularly handy because we have several family birthdays that fall in the two weeks after Christmas, so I’m always trying to keep track of which gifts I intend to give for Christmas, versus which I’m planning to give as birthday gifts. You can download my free gift tracking printable here.

The clipboard with my gift tracking list hangs on the wall of my guest room closet, right between my organized gift wrap supplies and the shelves where I stash the gifts until I’m ready to wrap them.

Now when I purchase a gift, it gets noted on the my gift tracking sheet as soon as it goes in the closet. Then when it comes time to start wrapping Christmas presents, I can simply consult my list and pull out the gifts that I need to wrap. Once a present has been wrapped, I put a check mark in the final column of my list so that I can easily keep track of what I’ve already wrapped and what I have left.

It used to be that every year on Christmas morning the boys would finish unwrapping their gifts and I think “where’s that other toy?”, only to find it still hiding in the closet. But not anymore!

And if it turns out, after all the presents are unwrapped, that they boys ended up with a duplicate toy from a relative, or if something doesn’t work, I can always find the receipt I need to make the return since I have tucked them all away in the pocket of my gift wrapping clipboard.

I have this thing with catalogs. I love flipping through them as soon as they hit my mailbox, and sticking little tabs on all the pages that inspire me. It’s tempting to want pretty new stuff every season, but my wallet obviously doesn’t agree.

Recently I spotted a gorgeous collection of white and gold “thankful” tableware at Crate and Barrel {affiliate link} and thought, maybe I need special plates just for Thanksgiving… but nope, I don’t. I don’t have the money or the space for a set of plates to use just once a year.

But what about one new set of inexpensive glass salad plates that I could re-style to create unique place settings for any season for just a few dollars and in just a few minutes? Now that is an idea my wallet will support!

Remembering a cool idea that I had seen at a conference I attended back in the spring, I realized that a set of clear glass plates and some scrapbook paper was all I needed to create a new look for our table season after season.

I bought an inexpensive set of a dozen glass salad plates {affiliate link} and picked up a pad of 6″ square scrapbook paper in the dollar section at Target.

I traced the center of one of the plates onto the back of a piece of scrapbook paper.

I cut along the pencil line, and then used that circle as a template to trace and cut more circles from the coordinating papers.

I stacked the glass plates on top of the scrapbook paper circles, and that’s it! A totally new look for my Thanksgiving table. Couldn’t be simpler right?

It will be so easy to update this look with new paper for each season, and the place setting possibilities are endless. Pretty wrapping paper for Christmas. Book pages for a book club dinner. Photos for a family birthday party. And all I have to store is one small stack of glass plates. That’s what I call winning at budget decor!

<img decoding="async" alt="Five Minute Fall Table Hack" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/BlueiStyle-Thanksgiving-Table-Setting-Hack-554x1024.jpg" title="FIVE MINUTE TABLE SETTING HACK!

Next Tuesday I’m joining a talented group on bloggers for a Thanksgiving tablescape blog hop, so be sure to stop by to see how my full table came together and to check out all of the other table designs. There will be something for every style!

You guys, this year is flying by. It still feels like summer around here, and yet the kids are busy deciding what they want to dress as for Halloween {which of course changes by the hour – today its superheroes}. I’ve always enjoyed Halloween because it’s a holiday that allows for so much creativity and imagination, but it’s even more fun now that I have young kids.

My boys love helping me decorate for Halloween and in true little boy fashion they find joy in anything that’s a little bit ooey, gooey, or gross. This year, I’m adding a few new little-boy approved touches to our Halloween decor, including these quick and easy printable apothecary labels that I’m excited to share with you!

It’s my honor today to close out the 30 Days of Halloween with my free printable Halloween apothecary labels, which you can download near the bottom of this post, followed by links to all of the other 29 Halloween projects! So, if you’re not yet in the Halloween spirit, don’t worry…because we’re going to help you get there!

For a few years now, I’ve been seeing bottles and jars with spooky labels popping up as Halloween decorating trend in stores, but I hadn’t been able justify buying any. I prefer to DIY as much of my holiday decor as I can because I don’t like spending much money on things I only use for a short time each year. So this year, I decided to create my own!

Designing the labels was a family affair. Everyone had fun coming up with ingredients that you might find in a spooky spell book. Here’s what we came up with…

I printed the labels onto glossy printable sticker paper {affiliate link} and cut them out.

With my labels ready to go, I started gathering some containers from around the house that I could add labels to. I grabbed an empty decanter from our basement bar, a wine bottle from the recycling bin, and a mason jar from my craft supply stash. Then I filled the bottles with liquids to match the labels – tomato cocktail juice for blood, V8 Healthy Greens for snake venom, and just water for the poison since clear looked best in the green glass bottle.

I wanted to add some texture to my display, so I shopped the spice racks in my pantry and came up with a variety of shapes and colors that paired well with some of the labels – white pepper corns for Wart of Toad, poppy seeds for Graveyard Dirt, chives for Scale of Dragon, star anise for Leg of Spider, and flour for Bone Dust.

You can buy test tube shaped containers at many craft stores {I recently saw them in the dollar bins near the registers at my local Michaels}, but I happened to have an old test tube styled spice rack that I held on to and pull out from time to time for various uses {like for this wedding shower game a couple of years ago}.

These apothecary labels would be perfect for hosting a spooky Halloween party. You could fill the bottles with the beverages you’re serving, and use test tubes for garnishments for dinner or toppings for an ice cream bar.

For now, I have my bottles and test tubes displayed in our kitchen along side one of my favorite Halloween DIYs from last year – the 3D skull art that I created in a thrift store frame.

This Christmas season, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to connect with a great organization in my community – the Anchor Center for Blind Children – by providing them with a donated Christmas tree that I decorated for their family upcoming holiday party. I’ll be sharing all of the details about that project and the fully decorated tree next week, but today I want to show how I created some custom ornaments for the tree. This is a great project for the kids to help with – super quick and easy, and no mess!

The Anchor Center obviously needed some anchor ornaments for their new Christmas tree, so my mom and I started brainstorming DIY options, but since we were on a very short timeline, it had to be super quick and easy!

We found some Silly Winks Glitter Sheets {backed by a think layer of foam} that were perfect for our ornament project when combined with a large anchor punch. Of course, you can choose any shape punch that fits your decor or simply catches your eye!

The foam sheets are thin enough to be easily punched – and best of all, very little if any glitter comes of when you cut and punch the sheets. I love the look of glitter, but it sure can be sure a pain to work with – so to get the look without the mess is a huge bonus in my book!

The punch cut through the foam with nice, smooth edges. It takes a decent amount of pressure to press down on the punch, but my boys loved helping by pressing down on top of my hand. Despite being quite thin, the foam backing provides just enough stability for the anchors to hold their shape perfectly.

I was able to punch an entire sheet of anchors in just a couple of minutes. The shape of the anchor lends itself perfectly to becoming an ornament because of the whole at the top, but you could easily use a regular hole punch to add a hole to the top of any other shape.

Once all of the anchors were cut out, I grabbed some left over gold thread and cut six inch lengths that I tied onto the ornaments to make the ready to hang on the tree.

My mom and I spent the afternoon decorating the tree, and the anchor ornaments were definitely just the special touch it needed! I’ll show you the rest of the tree next week!

Who doesn’t love snapping photos of rainbows?! I’ve seen your Facebook and Instagram feeds – so I know I’m not the only one. There’s just something about a rainbow that makes us all want to pull out our phones. But then what? What do you do with those photos? Well, today I have a super easy idea to get those photos off your phone and decorate for St. Patrick’s Day at the same time!

For both Christmas and Valentine’s Day I created a countdown for my boys, and they loved getting a little treat each day. I’ve never decorated for St. Patrick’s Day before, but I decided I should do at least a little something since the boys love the holidays. And they also love chocolate {weird, since this mama doesn’t}. So to keep it super simple, I decided to print out one of my favorite rainbow photos and display it with a pot of gold covered chocolate coins at the end of the rainbow!

We’ve captured a few great rainbow photos over time, including this one from a very wet boat ride in the Algarve region of Portugal, but since I’m in the photo, it wasn’t ideal for this project.

Probably my favorite rainbow photo is from Cape Point on the Cape Peninsula in South Africa. The location was stunning, and we couldn’t believe our luck to see a full rainbow while we were there. This was the photo I originally wanted to use for this project, but because the rainbow is all on the top half of the photo, I was going to be hard to make it look like my “pot of gold” was right at the end of the rainbow.

But then there was this photo that we took at the Cape of Good Hope, just a bit north of Cape Point. The rainbow was amazingly vibrant, and because it ends in the bottom right corner of the photo, it was ideal for this project!

I have lots of picture frames around the house that I could have used, but I thought a frame around the photo might destract from the appearance of the rainbow ending in the pot of gold, so I instead picked up a cheap 8×10 acrylic box frame from Michaels {only $3.99!}.

For my pot of gold, I scoured the kitchen cabinets in search of something that would work. The mortar of our mortar and pestel set from Ikea was just right for the job.

It really doesn’t get any faster and easier than a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow {photo}.

<img decoding="async" alt="St. Patrick's Day Decor Pot of Gold End of Rainbow" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/blueistyle-PotOfGoldEndOfRainbow.jpg" title="We all love snapping photos of rainbows, but then what do we do with them?

It’s nothing fancy, but it’s fun and my boys are excited that they’ll get to unwrap one gold chocolate coin each day.

Raise your hand if you love Kate Spade. Yep, that’s what I thought! Me too! I love all things Kate Spade, but those iconic black and white stripes and gold polka dots are especially swoon worthy! So when I decided to add some quick and easy Valentine’s Day decor to our home, I drew my inspiration from Kate.

As you probably know by now, paper mache letters from Hobby Lobby are one of my favorite craft supplies. I’ve used them for numerous other projects {like the Restoration Hardware inspired vintage industrial letters in Beckett’s room, my Crate and Barrel inspired HO HO HO letters, and our last name on our family photo shelves}.

There are so many fun ways to use these letters, and they are so versatile since they can be hung on a wall or sat on a shelf or table. I picked up two sets of X’s and O’s and started brainstorming ways to dress them up for Valentine’s Day.

Even though we have pops of hot pink in our living room during the spring and summer, I wanted to create some Valentine’s decor that departed from the standard pink and red. As I was flipping through a catalog I came across a photo of Kate Spade iPhone cases featuring the classic stripes and polka dots, and I instantly knew that’s how I would decorate my letters.

I started by giving each letter a coat of white acrylic paint, front and back.

Once the paint was dry, I started adding black stripes to one X and one O. Rather than trying to paint perfect stripes, I took the quick and easy route, and wrapped the letters in black electrical tape. The paper mache O has is quite rectangular in shape, making it easy to wrap in tape. I simply stuck the tape to the front side, wrapped it around to the back, and overlapped it.

Because of the angels, it was a bit trickier to wrap the electrical tape around the X, but I came up with a quick and easy method. I stuck a piece of tape to the front of the X, then wrapped it around to the side pressing it down flat in the correct position, then pinched the excess tape together at the corner. This is a bit hard to explain, but you’ll see what I mean in the top photo below. I used a small, sharp pair or scissors to trim of the excess at each corner. Just be careful not to trim off too much {but if you do, you can cover any white that shows through with a black Sharpie}.

The corners aren’t perfect, but unless you inspect them really closely, they look just great!

For the second XO set, I grabbed out the gold Sharpie paint marker that I had left over from my chalkboard globe project, and started drawing quick polka dots.

I carried the gold polka dots around the sides of the X and O, but opted not to draw them on the back {mostly to save time, since I knew I’d be sitting them in a spot where you would never see the back}.

These Kate Spade inspired Xs and Os were so quick and easy to make, but I couldn’t be more excited about how they turned out!

I already owned the paint, tape, and Sharpie, and I bought the letters on a half price sale – so the entire project cost me less than $5.

I don’t do a lot of decorating for Valentine’s Day, but I do like adding a few simple touches around the house to spread the love!
