Target is my happy place! When I was in law school and stressed about papers and exams, strolling around Target (even when I had no money to shop) was like my own personal form of therapy. Years later, as a new mom, people would advise me to sleep when the baby slept… but instead I often preferred to push a sleeping baby around Target in a stroller.

If you can relate to any of this, then let me introduce you to Cassondra Selby. She has officially earned the title of Coolest Mom by hosting the most adorable Target-theme birthday party for her Target-loving 7 year old daughter! When I saw the photos of the party that she posted in a Facebook group we’re both in, I immediately asked her if I could share them here with all of you.

Cassondra is a realtor who lives in Gettysburg, PA with her three children, her boyfriend, two dogs, some fish, a parrot, and their house duck. A few months ago, when she asked her youngest what she wanted to do for her 7th birthday, Andorra (whose idea of heaven is a trip to the Target Dollar Spot and shopping for Jojo clothes with an Icee) requested to take her friends shopping at Target.

She shares her daughter’s love of Target, but Cassondra couldn’t imagine trying to wrangle a bunch of seven year olds shopping in Target without going broke, so she came up with a better idea… a Target-themed birthday party!

DIY TARGET-THEMED PARTY DECOR

Let’s start with the Target-themed party decor that Cassondra created herself. She jokes that she’s always been extra, and loves going above and beyond and being that mom when it comes to planning parties. Her Cricut {the electronic cutting machine you often hear me talk about for my own DIY, decor, and organizing projects} helps her bring her ideas to life, including this awesome DIY Happy Birthday Banner. I adore the way she used the pages from Target ads behind the banner!

Cassondra welcomed her guests to the Target party by turning her patio door into an automatic sliding door {just don’t stand there too long waiting for it to open, haha}.

And what would a Target party be without the always helpful price scanner? Cassondra also made bathroom signs to stay true to the in-store experience.

Cassondra made an official-looking employee name tag for each party guest using white oval badges that she customized using red and black adhesive vinyl that she cut on her Cricut. The family even wore red shirts and khakis to complete the Target uniform. Andorra also reported that a few of her friends liked the name tags so much that they wore them to school the following Monday.

Of course, the birthday girl deserved special recognition, so Andorra was named Team Member of the Month!

If you’re planning a Target-themed party, a great tip is to stock up on red decor during an after-holiday sale. Cassondra purchased most of her red decor right after Valentine’s Day, but post-4th of July and post-Christmas would probably also be good times to stock up on red plates, cups, table covers, and balloons.

Did you spot that little “Target Kid” sign on the snack table? Cassondra came across this Target Kid definition while doing party research online, and made this sign using her Cricut. She painted the canvas red, cut the letters from white heat transfer vinyl, and applied the HTV to the canvas using a heat press.

TARGET-THEMED CAKE & COOKIES

The Target-theme didn’t stop at the decor, the cake and cookies are just perfection! The cake was made by A Little Bit Sweet…

These OMG so cute cookies were the first that the baker had ever made to sell. Isn’t that incredible? She did an amazing job!

The cookie artist doesn’t have a website yet, but she clearly has mega-talent, so I’ll update you when she ready for your orders!

MORE TARGET-THEMED PARTY DECOR

Every bit of this party is just jaw-droppingly perfect, but the Target shopping cart filled with all the birthday presents might be my very favorite detail. Cassondra was quick to point out that she didn’t steal it, and that they had permission to borrow the cart! What I really wanted to know was what kind of a reaction she got from the store when she explained why she wanted to borrow a cart.

Cassondra went to her local store to talk to a manager in person. She says, “I don’t think [the manager] knew what to say initially, but like I tell the kids, ‘you’ll never know unless you ask!'”

After she swore to return them, and even offered to pay or leave her credit card for a deposit (which they didn’t make her do), the manager agreed to let Cassondra borrow a shopping cart and shopping basket. The manager even gave the family Target sunglasses, Target highlighters, and lots of Target stickers.

In addition to the shopping cart that holds the birthday presents, Cassondra filled one Target shopping basket with bags on popcorn on the snack table.

Since party was held at the family’s home on Lake Heritage, Cassondra filled a another Target shopping basket with rolled up beach towels and purchased some awesome “junk food” pool floats based based on Target snack bar favorites [popcorn pool float | french fries pool float | pretzel pool float | pizza pool float].

Last, but not least, as a thank you for attending the party, each guest received a cute, red and white gift bag that Cassondra customized and filled with slime and other small toys from (you guessed it) the party aisle at Target.

Well, now I know what kind of a party I want for my next birthday!

Thanks so much to Cassondra for letting me share all the photos and details of this party here on the blog. After emailing back and forth with her, I’m pretty sure we’d be good friends if we didn’t live 1600 miles apart. I’m pretty sure our friendship would involve a lot of shopping dates at Target…

…and a lot of Cricut’ing crafting, of course!

I love to set a pretty and festive table, but it’s got to be easy and inexpensive! Oh, and modern. And colorful. I bet none of that surprises you at all!

Today I’m joining with a crazy talented group of bloggers to bring you a dozen holiday table setting ideas. You’ll find inspiration for every style, and lots of tips for creative ways to repurpose the decor you already have to set a table that will wow you guests!

This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience. If you buy something I recommend, you’ll pay the same price, but I may make a small commission.

A few years ago, I was in New York before Christmas, and I saw a gorgeous set of modern wood tabletop Christmas trees stained in bright shades of blue, green, and red. I wanted them for my kitchen table because I knew they’d add just the perfect combination of height and color, but I just couldn’t justify the cost of one, let alone the whole group I envisioned.

Instead, I came home and came up with my own, super simple, DIY version. I bought a bunch of paper mache cones and painted them red, blue, and several shades of teal. It took me very little time, but these bright trees make quite the statement.

Those HO HO HO letters on the sideboard in the background were another simple DIY inspired by a similar version that was also out of my Christmas decor budget. Grab that tutorial here.

I received the pretty, red and white color-block table runner last year, and the blue and white buffalo check napkins came from the Target dollar section last year {they are the same ones I used for my fall table; here’s a very similar set of navy buffalo check napkins for about the same price}.

This year, I really wanted red placements, but rather than running out to spend money on a color I would only use once a year, I improvised with scrapbook paper. Using paper in my seasonal table settings is one of my favorite tricks because it allows me to customize the look without splurging on new table linens for every holiday. It also makes clean up quick and easy – just toss the paper in the recycling bin!

We own one set of dishes that we use year round, but a few years ago Scott bought me this pretty set of silver and white snowflake dishes for holiday entertaining. I have matching bowls, but this year, I decided to mix things up a bit by layering in my set of clear glass salad plates. For spring and fall, I’ve cut circles of patterned scrapbook paper to place below the glass plates, but for Christmas, I decided to go with big, blue snowflakes.

I used my favorite crafting tool – my Cricut Explore Air electronic cutter – to cut four different snowflake shapes from blue, corrugated cardboard.

<img decoding="async" title="Modern & Bright Christmas Tablescape!

I’m really happy with the way my merry and bright Christmas table came together, and I’m proud that I was able to pull it together without buying anything new this year. It’s amazing what you can do just by digging into your stash of scrapbook paper!

CRICUT DESIGN SPACE IMAGES

Once I’d gathered my supplies, I was ready to cut some cute designs for my photo props. I wanted to make this as quick and easy as possible, so I searched the images available in Cricut Design Space.

Success! There were lots of great options for everything I searched! You’ll find tons of options, but if you want to make the same photo props that I did, here are the numbers for the Cricut Design Space images that I used:

Santa Hat: #M188702D

Santa Beard: #M1AABE3C

Elf Hat: #MF1C57

Rudolph Nose & Antlers: #M1AABDDD

Mistletoe: #M45AC3

Kiss: #M46686

Naughty: #MF670B

Nice: #MF66FF

Ho Ho Ho: #MF6713

Once I picked my images, all I needed to do was resize them. Since these photo props are just meant to me cute, really any size will do, but I went with a general rule of six inches wide for Santa’s beard, and between 8 and 10 inches wide for hats, depending on their shape.

CUTTING THE PHOTO BOOTH PROPS

Then I was ready to get cutting. I love that the Cricut brand materials come with specific cutting instructions right on the packaging. For the corrugated cardboard, it told me to set the dial to “Custom”…

… and then select “Corrugate Cardboard” from the drop down list of materials in Design Space.

These settings worked perfectly with my standard blade.

This was my first time cutting corrugated cardboard, and I was excited at how clean and nice the cuts turned out!

I used the corrugated cardboard for most of my photo props, but for a few things – like the speech bubbles – I decided that non-corrugated would be better. Fortunately, the Corrugated Cardboard Sets also came with a couple of sheets of flat cardboard in each of the same colors. I left the dial set to “Custom” but chose “Flat Cardboard” from the drop down list instead.

The corrugated and flat cardboard has a good weightiness to it, but I noticed that some of the larger photo props were still feeling a bit floppy {espeically the elf hat and tall reindeer antlers}. To stabilize them, I cut the same shape from a sheet of White Kraft Board {choose “Kraft Board” from the material drop down list before cutting} and glued that heftier layer to the back.

Once I had all of my images cut and glued together, I just needed to attach them to some sticks to make them easy to hold up. I already had some bamboo skewers in the kitchen drawer, so I used those {I like them because they are pretty long}, but wood craft sticks would work just as well.

Then I grabbed a roll of washi tape to quickly attach the sticks to the back of the photo props. If you use skewers like I did, just be sure to place the pointy end against the paper, and cover the tip with the washi tape so that no one gets poked. This leaves the blunt end of the skewers for your hand to hold.

And that’s it… quick and easy, but adorable photo props that look like they were professionally made. I know that my kids and their friends are going to get a ton of use out of these!

This week, I got to chaperone my first school field trip and join Beckett’s kindergarten class on a trip to a farm for tractor rides and harvesting vegetables. We had such a great time, but little brother Cooper was very disappointed that he didn’t get to join us. After all, he is the one who wants to be a farmer when he grows up. {Well, a farmer, a superhero, a construction guy, a fireman, married, and a dad, if you really want the full list of his future plans.}

With all the talk about farms this week, I was reminded that I’ve been wanting to show you the adorable cupcakes that I made for Cooper’s third birthday last year when we had his party at a little farm in town!

These cupcakes were completely Pinterest inspired, and I don’t normally share things on the blog that I made from someone else’s original idea, but in this case, I kept finding the same image all over Pinterest leading back to a photo upload site, but with no details or instructions provided anywhere. Since I couldn’t find a list of supplies, I spent way too much time wandering up and down the candy aisle at the grocery store trying to figure out what I could use to make the noses, ears, and horns for each animal.

So, to save you a little time and make these cupcakes as quick and easy as they should be, I wanted to provide the list of the candy I used. Of course, you can certainly make substitutions, but it’s always nice to have a starting point, right?

Mini Marshmallows – for sheep

Starburst – pink for pig and sheep ears, and pig and cow noses

Jelly Beans – various colors for beaks, ears, and noses

I started by baking a dozen cupcakes. While the cupcakes were in the oven, I scooped about half of the frosting out of the can and divided in into two bowls. In one bowl, I added yellow gel coloring {for the chickens}, and in the other I added red {for the pink pigs}.

When making pink frosting, it’s always best to start with less red coloring, stir it up to see what shade of pink you’ve created, and then slowly add more red until you get to the color of pink you want.

Once the cupcakes finished baking, I removed them from the pan and allowed them to cool. Then I placed them on my cupcake carrier before frosting them. I see so many pictures on Pinterest where people have decorated their cupcakes while they are still in the pan – please don’t do this friends, because then you won’t be able to lift them out without messing up all of your adorable decorations.

I decided to make three pigs {pink}, two chickens {yellow}, two sheep {white}, three cows {white}, and two roosters {white}.

Let’s talk about the pink noses and ears first, since those were the hardest for me to figure out how to create. I used a sharp pair of fine point craft scissors, and cut ovals for the pig snouts and circles for the cow noses.

As you can see, the edges were pretty rough when I cut the Starbursts, but I was able to roll them between my fingers to smooth them out and create nice, even shapes for the pig and cow noses.

Next, I unwrapped more square Starbursts, and cut them diagonally across to create triangles. I pinched the triangles between the fingers to make them a big longer and narrower. Then I pressed the tip of my craft scissors down into the triangular ears to make very cute ears for both the pigs and the sheep.

After placing the pigs’ eyes, nose, and ears, I used the black decorating gel to add two dots to the snouts. I also placed pink ears on the sheep, along with eyes and a pink jelly bean nose. Then I covered the rest of the sheep in min-marshmallows. After my first attempt, I discovered that the sheep had a much softer, fluffier look if I squished the marshmallows down a bit between my fingers before placing them on the cupcake.

<img decoding="async" title="You'll be mom-of-the-year when you make these easy farm animal cupcakes.

The chicken really couldn’t be any easier – two eyes, an orange jelly bean beak, and two red jelly beans for the comb. The roosters are very similar with, orange beaks, red combs, and and extra red jelly been for the wattle.

<img decoding="async" title="You'll be mom-of-the-year when you make these easy farm animal cupcakes.

Finally, I placed the eyes and pink Starburst noses on the cows, added two black gel dots, and used two black jelly beans for ears. I planned to use the Haribo cola bottles for the horns, but they were just too big straight out of the package. Instead, I used my craft scissors and cut the soda bottles down to be quite a bit narrower – continuing to trim until the size looked right for the cows.

Baking time aside, these adorable farm animal cupcakes only took me about 20 minutes to make, but they were a HUGE hit at the birthday party. Cooper and the other kids just loved them, and the parents were so impressed with my cupcake decorating skills {in other words, I had them totally fooled}!

I love a pretty tablescape, but, because of both budget and space, I don’t own a lot of different dishes. I have one basic set of square blue plates that we’ve used for every meal for the past 12 years. By getting a little creative and mixing in some of my inexpensive outdoor servingware, I was able to turn those dark navy plates into a bright and fresh spring table setting that is perfect for an Easter brunch.

Today I’ve joined with some of my blogging friends to show you our favorite ways to create simple spring and Easter inspired tablescapes by shopping your own home! Be sure to check out all the links at the end of this post for more gorgeously budget-friendly tables!

I’ve been swooning over springy, pastel dishes in all the stores lately…pretty much the opposite of our dark, square dinner plates. But I just can’t bring myself to buy new dishes for each season, and even if I wanted to, I really don’t have room for them in our already jam packed cabinets.

Instead, I started digging around to see what I could come up with to brighten up our table for spring. I grabbed out the inexpensive teal plastic plates that we use for barbecues, as well as our outdoor flatware, and the acrylic tumblers {affiliate link} that we use for on the patio. Teal is one of my favorite colors, and feels perfect for spring, so I was off to a good start. Don’t be afraid to mix in some of your outdoor dinnerware when setting your indoor dining table.

Next, I decided to add the set of inexpensive glass salad plates {affiliate link} that purchased back in the fall. I justified the purchase for my Thanksgiving table because I knew that I could use clear glass plates for any season or holiday. To brighten up my spring table plans, I decided to employ the same trick that I used for Thanksgiving, by adding a colorful piece of scrapbook paper below each glass salad plate.

I traced the bottom center of the plates onto four different colors of gold-flecked scrapbook paper…

…then quickly cut out the circles.

I stacked my teal patio plates on top of my square, navy dishes, and then layered each scrapbook paper circle below one of the glass plates, and voila! A totally new table setting look using items I already had on hand.

Last spring, I placed seven Pellegrino bottles down the center of my kitchen table, with one tall stem of faux cherry blossoms in each, and it was love at first sight! These upcycled vases added the height I wanted for a center piece, and had the perfect pop of color. I considered switching it up and doing something different this year, but I just couldn’t do it. I wanted to see those green bottle vases and pink flowers lining my table again this year! Here are 13 other household items that can be repurposed as beautiful vases for spring.

I used to think I had to choose between a tablecloth, a table runner, and placemats, but I’ve realized that I can mix and match them for a more layered and finished table. Mixing and matching also allows you to create lots of different table looks from just a few key pieces. For spring, I combined my teal placemats with my striped table runner {affiliate links}.

I’m so happy with how my spring table came together, and the fact that I didn’t have to buy anything new to pull it off. Here’s a summary of those four tips:

1. Don’t be afraid to mix in some of your outdoor dinnerware when setting your indoor dining table

2. Add a colorful scrapbook paper below clear glass salad plates to give your table a new look for each season

3. Repurpose household items, such as bottles, to create unique and free vases for real or fake flowers

4. Mix and match tablecloths, runners, and placemats, to create lots of different table looks

With the pretty pastel colored scrapbook paper below the salad plates and the pink cherry blossoms, my table is now ready for Easter brunch!

I’ve helped to host quite a few baby showers over the past several years, and it seems almost universal that the guest of honor/mom-to-be says these two things: (1) “I don’t really love baby shower games. No, really, please don’t make me look at candy melted in diapers!”; and (2) “It makes me a little uncomfortable to be the center of attention during present opening.” I hear you, my friends!

As a result of these common sentiments, I have two favorite go-to baby shower activities that always prove popular with the guest-of-honor and guests alike. I’ll share them both with you, starting today with a fun little activity that asks the question “Who Will Baby Look Like?”.

I call it Baby Face Mix and Match, and it always results in lots of laughs!

When I was pregnant with my first son, I just couldn’t wait to see what my baby would look like. Would he look more like me or Scott? Would he have my big blue eyes and Scott’s rosy cheeks? {Yes and Yes} And I know all mom’s to be are wondering the exact same thing.

They say a photo is worth a thousand words, so that must mean two photos are worth even more. The Baby Face Mix and Match game takes photos of mom and dad, cut into strips, and asks guest to combine the features together to predict what the baby might look like.

<img decoding="async" alt="Bab Face Mix and Match Game" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/BlueiStyle-BabyFaceWhoWillBabyLookLike.jpg" title="This is one baby shower game that everyone loves!

Here’s what you’ll need:

Copies of mom and dad’s photos, cut into strips {eyes, nose, mouth, etc}. Give each guest a ziplock bag will a full set of strips from mom and dad’s photos. I have a Photoshop tutorial below that shows you how I like to do it so that the pieces fit together well and are quick and easy to cut.

One sheet of paper per guest, for gluing down the face they create. I like to create a page with mom and dad’s faces at the top and the question “What will baby look like?” because it creates a great keepsake for mom. Photoshop instructions for this background sheet are below.

Glue Sticks. Make sure you have one per guest so that this can be a quick and fun activity. You can buy a box of 30 on Amazon {affiliate link} for under $10.

Clothespins. I generally like to hang a couple pieces of string across the wall in advance, and I sit out a bowl of clothespins so that the guests can clip up their baby face creations for all to see.

I have created this Baby Face game for quite a few baby showers over the years, and it always proves to be popular across all the generations. You can either invite everyone to create their faces at the same time, or you can just sit the pieces out on a table and invite people to create a face at their leisure.

<img decoding="async" alt="Baby Face Mix and Match Game" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/BlueiStyle-BabyFaceBabyShowerGame.jpg" title="This is one baby shower game that everyone loves!

<img decoding="async" alt="Baby Face Mix and Match Game" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/BlueiStyle-BabyFaceBabyShowerGame3.jpg" title="This is one baby shower game that everyone loves!

Guests love this activity because it’s so quick and easy! Even in a group where the guests don’t all know each other, creating the baby faces almost manages to get people laughing and chatting with one another.

<img decoding="async" alt="Favorite Baby Shower Game" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/BlueiStyle-BabyShowerBabyFaceGame2.jpg" title="This is one baby shower game that everyone loves!

<img decoding="async" alt="Baby Shower Game Everyone Loves" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/BlueiStyle-BabyShowerBabyFaceGame4.jpg" title="This is one baby shower game that everyone loves!
My favorite part is seeing all of the faces hanging together on the wall!

<img decoding="async" alt="Who will baby look like shower game" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/BlueiStyle-BabyShowerBabyFaceGame10.jpg" title="This is one baby shower game that everyone loves!
It’s really amazing how different they all look, and how some combinations create much cuter “baby faces” than others!

*Big thanks to my friend beautiful friend Rebekah for allowing me to use the photos of her and her husband for this post and tutorial!

PHOTOSHOP INSTRUCTIONS

STEP 1: SELECTING THE PHOTOS
To start the process, find photos of the mom-to-be and dad-to-be where is each is facing the camera straight on with nothing covering either of their faces. To print clearly, the photos need to have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi (meaning that photos pulled down off of Facebook won’t work well). Additionally, the closer up the photos are, the better. If the face is very small in the original photo, then it is likely that the image quality will not be sufficient when the photo is blown up to the final head and shoulders dimensions of approximately 5.5 inches wide by 7 inches tall.

STEP 2: PREPARING THE PHOTOS
Begin by opening each photo up in Photoshop and cropping each down to just the head and shoulders.

It is also important that heads not be tilted in the photos. The easiest way to ensure that the heads are both straight enough is by using the guides in Photoshop. Pull down one guide line to determine if the pupils of both eyes are more or less in a straight line. {If you are not familiar with guides, here is a quick and easy tutorial from EHow.}

If the head is tilted (if the pupils are not lined up), this can be adjusted using the “Image–>Rotation–>Arbitrary” option in Photoshop. Rotation of just a few degrees either clockwise or counter clockwise will likely be enough to straighten the photo up.

STEP 3: LINING UP FACIAL FEATURES
In this step, you’ll be making minor adjustments to the size of one or both of the photos so that both of the heads are approximately the same height from top of head to bottom of chin. There are numerous ways to do this, but the method I find easiest is to copy the dad’s photo (CTRL+C) and paste it on top of the mom’s photo (CTRL+V). Then adjust the opacity of the dad’s photo to be 50%. This allows you to see the mom’s photo below the dad’s, and allows you to see how the facial proportions compare. {Here’s a quick tutorial on adjusting opacity, if you need further instructions.}

In the image above, you see that the mom and dad’s eyes, nose and mouth line up pretty closely. The dad’s face is a bit wider than the mom’s, but that’s ok. The two faces will never have the exact proportions, but the important part is for adjust the sizes of the photos until the facial features line up approximately from top to bottom {side to side is less important}.

If the size of either photos needs to be adjusted, select the layer you want to adjust, click CTRL+T {or choose “Free Transform” from the Edit menu}, and then hold down the SHIFT key and drag the corners of the selected layer to adjust the size while keeping the proportions the same. Continue adjusting the two layers until both faces are approximately the same size from the top of the head to the bottom of the chin.

Finally, crop out any excess around either of the faces so that the final image dimensions are exactly the same {I usually aim for a final image size of 5.5″x7″}. Once the faces are sized correctly, save each file. I suggest naming the files, “MomFace” and “DadFace” {using their names in place of Mom and Dad}.

STEP 4: DETERMINE WHERE TO PLACE THE CROP MARKS
The next step is to prepare the images to be printed and cut into strips, but before this can occur, you need to determine where to cut. Open a new document (CTRL+N), and set the dimensions to 8.5″x11″, the resolution to 300 pixels/inch, and the background color to white. Now open the mom and dads’ photos that you saved in the prior step. Copy each photo (CTRL+C), and paste each onto the document (CTRL+V). Both will automatically be centered within the new document, meaning that when you paste in the second photo it will be placed directly on top of the first photo. Just as you did before, change the opacity of the top photo to 50%, so that the lower photo can be seen through the top photo.

Now, begin pulling down guide lines to determine where the crop marks should be placed so that the images can be cut into the following strips: top of the head, forehead, eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth, chin, shoulders. {Again, refer to this tutorial from EHow if you need instructions for inserting guide lines.} Once the guide lines are in place, it will look something like this:

By inserting the guide lines while the two faces are layered, you can selected guide line placements that work for both faces {in other words, placement that won’t cut through the middle of the eyes on one of the faces}. Once the guidelines are in place, change the opacity of the top face layer back to 100% to get a better look at the top face. Double check that the guide line placement doesn’t cut through the center of any facial features.

Then bring the face on the lower layer to the top by right clicking on the photo and selecting “Layer 1,” then from the Layer menu, choose Arrange–>Bring to Front. Again double check that the guide line placement doesn’t cut through the center of any facial features.

STEP 5: INSERTING THE CROP MARKS
Once you have confirmed that the guide line placement works for both faces, it is time to insert the crop marks. The guide lines will not be visible when the images are printed, so it is necessary to insert lines {crop marks} that will show up on the printed documents. However, you don’t want the lines to cross over the actual face, so begin by adding two vertical guide lines on the right and left sides of the photo.

Now use the Line Tool to draw in the crop marks along each of the guide lines to the right and left of the photo. I suggest drawing the crop marks in black and using a line width of 3 pixels.

The crop marks that you’ve drawn in will be hard to see because of the blue guide lines, but once you have finished drawing all the lines, click CTRL+H to hide the blue guide lines. With the guide lines hidden, you will be able to clearly see the crop marks that you have drawn in, and your image will look like this:

STEP 6: SAVE THE IMAGES
With your crop marks inserted, it is time to save the images. Save as a JPEG, naming the file according to the face that is currently on the top layer (i.e., “MomFaceForPrinting”). DO NOT CLOSE THE FILE YET!! {If you close at this point, when you reopen the image as a JPG you will no longer be able to access the other photo layer}

Now bring the lower layer back to the front {right clicking on the photo, selecting Layer 2, then going to Layer–>Arrange–>Bring to Front}. With the alternate photo in the front click “Save As” {NOT JUST “SAVE”), and name the file accordingly (i.e., “DadFaceForPrinting”), again, saving it as a JPEG. Close the file.

STEP 7: CREATE THE BACKGROUND PAGE
When pieces the face strips together, the baby shower guests will need a page to glue them to. You could certainly just give each guest a blank piece of paper {in which case you can skip this step}, but I prefer to create a background page that looks like this:

Start by opening a new document (CTRL+N), and set the dimensions to 8.5″x11″, the resolution to 300 pixels/inch, and the background color to white. Then open the files that you named MomFace and DadFace (not MomFaceForPrinting). Resize each photo to 2 inches wide {which will make the height something in the range of 2.8″ inches}.

Copy each photo (CTRL+C) and paste each (CTRL+V) on to the new blank document. When placing the photos, leave a .75 inch margin at the top, left and right of the page. This placement will ensure a large enough margin for printing, while still leaving enough blank space on the page for the face strips to be glued to the page.

Between the photos, add text along the lines of “Who Will Baby Girl ___ Look Like?” Save this document with a file name such as “BackgroundPage.”

STEP 8: PRINT AND CUT
This step really doesn’t require much explanation, other than to say that it is definitely best to cut one “mom face” and one “dad face” at a time, then place the cut strips of each into an envelope or a ziplock bag before moving on to cut one more of each. If you cut all of the “mom faces” at once, it will become a big headache trying to make sure that you get the right pieces paired together. {TRUST ME!}

STEP 9: OPTIONAL: CREATE AN ONLINE MORPHED IMAGE
This is the optional step, but I think it’s a fun addition. I aways like to use an online morphing program, like MorphThing.com to take mom and dad’s faces and blend them together to create become one. Just follow the instructions on the website to upload mom and dad’s individual photos and morph them together.

I always think it’s the most fun to wait until after all of the baby shower guests have created their baby faces, and then present the morphed photo to mom as something to hold on to and compare to the real baby later months later.

There you have it! I promise it’s not as complicated as it might look. Once you get the hang of these quick steps, it becomes really easy to recreate this game for each baby shower you help to host! If you have any questions about how this tutorial, feel free to leave them in the comments below!

I’m pretty good at a lot of artsy and craftsy things, but my sewing skills are very basic! But when my mom showed me how to make a fabric banner using chalkboard fabric, I thought, “now that’s a sewing project simple enough that even I could do it!” And if I can do it, then anyone can!

So today I’m excited to show you just how easy it is to make your own DIY pennant banner with reusable chalkboard fabric that you can write on and wipe off over and over to decorate for any special occasion or season!

I love these chalkboard fabric pennants for many reasons – because they are reusable and versatile, because I can string together as many or as few as I want, and most of all, because it takes just a few minutes to write on them and hang them up to create a banner for any celebration!

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, then you’ve probably seen my chalkboard banner show up in quite a few different posts – from my 4th of July backyard, to my Halloween decor, and my Christmas home tours.

*If you don’t own a cutting mat and rotary cutter, you can instead use a pen to mark the triangles on the back of the fabric, then cut them with scissors, and trim the edges with a pair of pinking shears.

STEP 1: CUT CHALKBOARD FABRIC

Begin by cutting an 8 inch strip of chalkboard fabric. Using a fabric cutting ruler, cutting mat, and a rotary cutter makes this very quick and ensures a nice, straight, clean cut. But if you don’t have these supplies – no worries! You can simply cut with scissors taking care to get a very straight strip.

Then lay your 8 inch strip of fabric on your cutting mat and place an 8″ 60 degree triangle cutter on top. Starting at one end of the strip, use a rotary cutter to cut the first triangle, then flip the triangle cutter over and cut another.

Continue cutting triangles until you have reached the end of your strip of fabric.

You will need two triangles per pennant, so continue cutting as many 8″ strips and as many triangles as necessary, depending on the number of pennants you would like to create. Think about the various works and phrases you might want to spell out, and then make a few more for good measure.

With all of your triangles of chalkboard fabric cut, begin pairing up the triangles, placing them back to back. They may not line up exactly, but that’s ok – I’ll address it in a later step.

STEP 2: CUT VELCRO STRIPS

Next, unroll a length of One Wrap Velcro and cut it into two
inch strips. You will need one piece of Velcro for each pennant that you make.

One Wrap Velcro is double sided and sticks to itself when it’s wrapped around, making it perfect for this project, as I’ll show you later!

STEP 3: SEW CHALKBOARD PENNANTS

Now you are ready to sew your chalkboard pennants together. Take one pair of triangles {laid back to back}, and fold them in half to quickly find the top center.

Then unfold the triangles and place one piece of Velcro on top, with the edge of the Velcro aligned with the center of the top triangle {as shown in the photo below}.

Using black thread, sew around the triangles, stitching the Velcro in place as you go. Leave about a quarter of an inch seam allowance around all edges {error on the side of a larger seam allowance, rather than a smaller one}.

STEP 4: TRIM EDGES OF PENNANTS

Now that the pennants are sewn together, it’s time use a rotary pinking blade to clean up the edges of the triangles that may not line up perfectly.

Lay each pennant on your cutting mat cutting mat and place a cutting ruler on top of the fabric to give you a straight edge to cut against. Then use a pinking rotary cutter to trim off the very edges of the triangles being careful not to cut into any of the seams!

The pinking cleans up the look of the edges, and make the chalkboard pennants extra cute!

If you do not own a pinking rotary cutter, just use a pair of pinking shears. As is true anytime you are using scissors on fabric, make sure the pinking shears are nice and sharp. Do not attempt to use scissors that have previously been used to cut paper. Paper quickly dulls scissors, and dull scissors do not cut fabric well.

You’re chalkboard pennants are now complete and ready for
use!

TIP: Preparing the Pennants for Use with Chalk

Chalkboard fabric {or blackboard fabric as it may be called, depending on where you purchase it} can be used with regular chalk, or with chalk markers. If you are going to use regular chalk on your pennants, you will first need to prime the fabric by rubbing the side of a piece of chalk over the entire surface, then wiping off the chalk with a soft cloth. If you don’t prime the chalkboard fabric first, it may result in the chalk becoming permanent, or not cleaning of well.

If instead you plan to write on the pennants with chalk markers {my preferred method}, you don’t need to prime the fabric with chalk before use.

TIP: Cleaning Chalk Markers Off of the Chalkboard Pennants

Chalk markers should wipe off of with a damp cloth, but I have found a Magic Eraser is the fastest and easiest way to clean off you chalkboard pennants. Simply dampen the Magic Eraser to erase the writing, then use a dry paper towel to wipe away the excess. If any residue remains, simply repeat the process.

It best to clean off the pennants immediately after each use, but even when I’ve been lazy and left the chalk marker writing on my pennants for months at a time, I’ve never had any trouble erasing the writing. When you first wipe off the pennants, you may notice a faint shadow of the writing remains, but that shadow quickly fades away.

HANGING YOUR CHALKBOARD PENNANT BANNER

After you’ve written on your chalkboard pennants, you’re ready to hang it with coordinating ribbon or twine. Because the One-Wrap Velcro sticks to itself, all you need to do is wrap the Velcro around the ribbon or string, press it together, and it will hold securely.

Once your pennants are on the string, you can easily adjust the spacing by sliding them back and forth. This makes it quick and easy to get your banner centered and hanging just the way you want it. The pennants look great spaced apart or overlapping.

I generally end up hang my chalkboard banner in front of a wall, but because the pennants are double-sided, there is no right and wrong side. That means that if you want to hang the banner along a railing, or between two pillars or trees for an outdoor party, you could easily write on both sides of the pennants for added effect!

I use my chalkboard pennant banner all around the house for all of our celebrations and to decorate for the holidays.

Last summer we hung the banner in the backyard for the 4th of July, spelling out “STARS AND STRIPES” on my chalkboard pennants above our outdoor dining table. That flag inspired centerpiece for the 4th of July was a simple IKEA hack, and filled with citronella tea lights it helps keeps the bugs away when we dine outdoors.

At Christmas, we set up our tree in our basement between our family room and the boys’ play area. The last couple of years, I have strung the chalkboard pennants up above their toys and spelled out “NAUGHTY OR NICE” as a cute little reminder that Santa is always watching and they needed to be good if they wanted to find presents under the tree on Christmas morning!

You can find a lot of paper chalkboard banner options at craft and party supply stores, but these paper banners are really only good for use only. I love that my chalkboard fabric banner can be used over and over again for every party and every season!

A couple of summers ago, I hung a chalkboard banner in the backyard for my son’s first birthday party. The weather was forecast to be nice, but right before the party started, a huge storm moved though with crazy amounts of rain and hail, and even tornado warnings. We quickly grabbed as many of the decorations as we could and ran into the house, but some decorations – including the chalkboard banner – were left outside until after the storm ended. Fortunately, all I had to do was wipe the pennants down and lay them flat to dry, and they were good as new!

Last month I turned an old printer stand into a trendy bar cart as part of the Drab to Fab furniture makeover series that I worked on in partnership with Rust-Oleum to be displayed at the Denver Home Show. But I quickly realized the bar cart just didn’t look as cool as I envisioned when it was empty – it really needed to be staged with bottles are bar accessories at the Home Show in order for people to get the full picture. That meant I needed to come up with a few quick items to stage the cart with that wouldn’t cost me much money, but that would still look very stylish on display.

When I think stylish, Kate Spade New York always comes to mind, so I looked around online at some of her gorgeous bar accessories for inspiration. I came across a really unique champagne tote and an acrylic, gold polka dot ice bucket. I knew I could quickly and easily recreate both looks at a fraction of the cost! And since nothing says Kate Spade more than black and white stripes, I also came up with a super easy way to create a striped tray for the bottom shelf of the bar cart.

This post contains affiliate links. If you buy something that I recommend, you pay the same price, but I may receive a small commission.

Since I didn’t want to spend much money, or much time. I had to get creative! Here’s what I started with – an empty one-gallon paint can {it was an extra that I already had on hand from organizing our paint supplies in the utility room}; a red metal planter {sent to me by a fellow blogger with the challenge of upcycling it}, and an inexpensive plastic serving tray. Each transformation took me only about five minutes!

Let’s start with the tray. I didn’t want to mess with painting stripes, so instead I affixed strips of black electrical tape to the bottom of the tray, pressing down firmly to eliminate any air bubbles under the tape.

Once the tray was covered in black-taped stripes, I took all three pieces out to the garage for a coat of Rust-Oleum white spray lacquer. I didn’t want to paint the inside of the paint can, so used some blue painter’s tape to create a barrier beneath the inner edge.

I sprayed each item with several thin, even coats of the white lacquer paint, letting it dry between coats.

After the paint was dry, I brought everything back in the house. At this point, the tray was already complete. By spray painting only the bottom side of the tray, the black stripes remain visible from the top, and the tray also remains food safe. I used the tray on the bottom of the bar cart for bottles of liquor.

To complete the look of the champagne bucket and the ice bucket, I used some gold adhesive vinyl. The Kate Spade champagne tote that I was inspired by had a spade in the center, but for my version, I decided on a star. I cut a large circle, a small star, and the letters for POP FIZZ CLINK using my old-school Cricut machine {some day I’ll finally upgrade to the fancy new Cricut Explore}.

Using my Cricut cutter made this project really easy to customize, but you could also purchase gold sticker letters from a craft store, and cut the circle by hand.

I totally love the way the champagne bucket turned out! So much more stylish than that dirty, red planter it used to be.

The Kate Spade ice bucket was actually acrylic, rather than white like my version. If I hadn’t already had that metal paint can on hand, and if I hadn’t been doing this project as quickly as possible, I would have instead purchased a clear paint can for an even higher-end look. Nonetheless, I think the glossy white looks great with the gold polka dots. I cut the polka dots using my Fiskars round squeeze punch.

I placed the polka dots on the paint can in straight rows.

Finally, I used a gold oil-based Sharpie paint marker to color the handle of the paint can ice bucket.

Finally, I decided to add the letters “ICE” down the center, unlike the original Kate Spade version. I probably wouldn’t have added the letters if I was using a clear can, but the I felt that on my white version it made it look more like an ice bucket, and less like a paint can.

I staged the bar cart using my new Kate Spade-inspired creations, and what a big impact!

For the bar cart display at the Denver Home Show I used empty wine and liquor bottles rather than full {I collected them from the restaurants in our neighborhood}, but my simple bar accessories really completed the look.

I love to cook, but I’m typically more of a recipe follower than a recipe maker. About a decade ago, I tried pomegranate guacamole for the first time – made by none other than Dean Martin’s youngest daughter, Gina. I asked her for the recipe, but when she sent it over to me, it was for her regular guac, not the pomegranate version. I tried simply adding pomegranate seeds to the recipe she gave me, but it wasn’t right. I couldn’t bring myself to bug her for the recipe for a second time, so I decided to play around with different combinations of ingredients on my own.

After years of tweaking, pomegranate guac has become one of my go to recipes. My friends are constantly asking me to bring it to any gathering! With the Super Bowl coming up this weekend, it seemed like the perfect time to share it with all of you. {If you’re hosting a party for the big game, be sure to also check out these Super Bowl party decorating ideas.}

INGREDIENTS:
4 large, ripe avocados

1/4 cup red onions, finely chopped

2 serrano pepper, finely chopped, with seeds

2 cloves garlic, pressed

1/4 cup cilantro, finely chopped

2 tbsp lime juice

1 tbsp coarse sea salt

1 cup pomegranate seeds

Peel, core, and quarter the avocados. Chop or mash the avocados to your desired level of chunkiness. I prefer to use a mortar and pestle to make mine pretty smooth because the other ingredients add a lot of chunkiness, but a fork also works well.

Stir in the chopped red onions, serrano peppers, garlic, and cilantro until well combined. Then add the pomegranate seeds and stir gently to combine without squishing the seeds.

Finally, add in the lime juice and sea salt to taste. The serrano seeds add a good deal of kick to this guac. If you don’t like your guac spicy, you can remove the serrano seeds completely – or add more lime juice to help cut the heat.

Serve with your favorite tortilla chips and enjoy. The sweet and tartness of the pomegranate seeds is a perfect compliment to the spiciness of the peppers!

A couple of notes on pomegranate seeds:

Pomegranates are in season in the Northern Hemisphere from about October through February. One pomegranates yield about 1 cup of seeds. Personally, I don’t like the mess of removing pomegranate seeds since they so easily stain countertops, cutting boards, and clothes. I prefer to spend a bit more for the convenience of buying ready to eat seeds in 4 oz {1/2 cup} quantities from the refrigerated case in produce section of the grocery store.

It is becoming more common for pomegranates and their seeds to be imported from the Southern Hemisphere from March through May, but it’s pretty hit and miss at my local grocery stores. I’ve learned to call ahead to several stores to check availability before heading out to do buy ingredients if I want to make this guac during the spring months. I also noticed frozen pomegranate seeds at a grocery store recently. I have not yet tried the frozen variety, but if they defrost well, this might be the answer to enjoying pomegranate guacamole year round!!
