I like the style of the floating cabinet in our powder room, but it’s very limited on actual storage space. I’ve had a hard time finding an under bathroom sink organizer that would fit around the pipes in this tiny cabinet.

Over the years, I purchased a few options – but each time I broke my own cardinal rule and didn’t measure first, so not surprisingly, none of them fit.

As a result, the cabinet ended up looking like this for far too long…

I know I’m not the only one with a very small cabinet in the powder room, so I’m excited to share some tiny bathroom storage ideas with you!

Have a larger cabinet that you need to organize? Then you’ll want to check out my tips for organizing under the master bathroom sink.

My friends at iDesign sent me the products that I used in this post, but as always, all opinions are my own. This post also contains affiliate links. If you purchase something I recommend, you’ll pay the same price, but I may receive a small commission.

How to Organize Under the Bathroom Sink

When I finally got serious about organizing our small bathroom storage cabinet, I took careful measurements. I knew that in order to make the most of this small space, I needed to figure out how to add a shelf under the bathroom sink.

After doing some research, I found a flexible under bathroom sink storage solution that would actually fit my small, modern powder room vanity.

Before I started organizing, I emptied everything out of the cabinet and wiped it down so I could start with a clean, blank slate.

I assembled the frame of the shelving unit outside of the cabinet first, but when I went to put it in place, I realized the top, back bar needed to be assembled in place in order to fit behind the pipe. Fortunately, it was a quick fix.

With the shelf frame in place, I was able to start placing the adjustable shelves. They come in two different widths, allowing the flexibility to fit them around your unique pipe configuration.

My careful measurements paid off this time around, and the clear handled bins I chose fit just right on the top shelf in our powder room cabinet!

A clear, divided bin was perfect for storing feminine products and organizing tampons and pads.

I’m always a proponent of adding labels to make it easier to keep things organized, but labels are especially important in shared spaces. It can be awkward for guests to ask for what they need when it comes to matters of the bathroom, so adding labels can make it easier for them to find what they need and feel comfortable helping themselves.

After filling up the bin full of feminine products, I added a cute label using my Cricut.

Another, deeper clear handled bins provides the perfect hand towel storage for this small bathroom cabinet.

I had a few things – like my toilet cleaner and air freshener) that were too tall for the bottom shelf, but I realized they fit perfectly in front of the pipes where there was no shelf top shelf. Tucking them right behind that front bar still makes them easy to take on and off the shelf.

After organizing the cabinet and creating a dedicated space for everything, I wanted to add a little something extra.

Each morning when I open the cabinet in my master bathroom, it makes me smile {see why!}, so I wanted to add a little surprise behind the cabinet door in our powder room to make our guests smile as well.

I cut the text on my Cricut using removable, adhesive vinyl, and then used transfer tape to apply it to the cabinet face where it’s hidden when the door is closed.

Small Space Bathroom Storage

Our powder room storage cabinet may be tiny, but with some smart organizing we’ve been able to make the most of this space. Thanks to the adjustable under sink organizer shelf and some clear handled bins, I was able to fit all of the powder room essentials into this cabinet.

Under Bathroom Sink Cabinet Storage Tips for Powder Rooms

I hope that these small bathroom storage ideas have been helpful. To summarize, keep these key tips in mind:

Make a list of the essentials for the powder room cabinet, keeping guests in mind. Consider including: extra toilet paper, air freshener, extra hand towels, and feminine products. Store non-essential items elsewhere when space is limited.

Take careful measurements, including the location of pipes, height, width, and depth before purchasing any organizers. Look for solutions that are adjustable and expandable. Consider also using the space on the back of the door for extra storage (as illustrated here).

Use appropriately sized bins to keep smaller items contained and organized. Smaller bins for specific items typically work better than larger baskets. It’s easier to find things, and easier to keep the cabinet organized when everything has a dedicated space.

Add Labels. Adding labels is always a good idea, but especially in shared spaces. In the powder room cabinet, labels make it easier for guests to find what they need and feel comfortable helping themselves.

Figuring out how to organize under the bathroom sink is made exponentially more challenging my those darn pipes and hoses that cut through the middle of the space. But I’m finally claiming victory and sharing some under bathroom sink organization ideas and smart space saving tips to help you do the same!

In the past, I had made a half-hearted attempt at organizing the bathroom cabinet under my sink, by adding a couple of baskets, but containers don’t do a lot of good unless you take the time to purge, sort, and create a system you can keep up with. I did none of these things! I just put anything and everything in the baskets, and then let more and more stuff pile up. And I honestly had no idea what has hiding at the bottom or behind the baskets.

But this chaos was taking a toll on my morning routine, so I finally moved this project to the top of my priority list. You may have already seen a sneak peek at this project over on Instagram, where I partnered with The Container Store to share some under bathroom sink organization ideas, but I know a project like this can feel overwhelming, so I wanted to walk you through my step by step process.

HOW TO ORGANIZE UNDER BATHROOM SINK

Following my own advice from my 10 step guide to getting organized and staying organized {download your free copy of my eBook here}, I started with a blank slate. I cleared everything out and spent some time purging and recycling.

Under sink spaces are particularly challenging because of those pipes and hoses cutting through the middle of the space, so it’s especially important to take detailed measurements before shopping for under bathroom sink organizers – including the height, width, and depth of the cabinet, as well as the space below and in front of the pipes. I also love using the space on the back of my cabinet doors, so I measured the door as well.

There are a lot of pre-fab “under sink organizer” products out there, but every sink is configured differently, so there’s really not a one size fits all solution. Starting with detailed measurements will help you choose organizing containers that will fit your space, and rule out those that won’t {saving you extra trips and returns}.

Based on my measurements, I had a pretty good idea of how I wanted to organize under my bathroom sink, but it still took a little bit of tweaking to get it right. I started with two divided lazy susans – one with a 11.5 inch diameter, and one with a 9 inch diameter – and one rectangular pantry bin {don’t let the names of containers fool you – use them wherever you want!}.

The containers fit, but I still didn’t feel like I was making the best use of my space, so I rearrange them and tried again. This time I placed both divided lazy susans to one side and tucked a deep drawer bin under the pipe on the left side.

Once I was happy with the layout of the under sink organizers, I was ready to add my favorite element – another clear storage bin attached to the inside of one of the cabinet doors. I placed three adhesive picture hanging strips on the back of the bin…

…then I attached the bin to the cabinet door, making sure it was positioned to allow the door to open and close smoothly.

I had already finished purging, but before I could start filling up all of my new under sink organizer containers, I needed to group like items together. I sorted my items into the following categories:

Daily Use

Lotion

Hair

Scent

Main-Pedi

Travel

Face

Medicine

I wanted to keep the items I use every day – like my blow dry spray, detangler, hair spray, lotion, and favorite scent – in easy reach. I placed these items in the bin attached to the door so that I can grab them and put them away quickly each morning.

Then I started filling the up the lazy susans with one category of items in each section. Some categories got two sections if one wasn’t enough. The larger lazy susan has 5 sections, and the smaller has three.

Once the lazy susans were filled, I created some labels from adhesive vinyl using my Cricut. These labels not only make it look a little prettier, they also make it easier for me to quickly find what I’m looking for, and make putting things away pretty much fool proof, which is my favorite kind of organizing system!

By simply spinning the lazy susans, I can easily access the items in each section. This totally solves my old problem of not knowing what’s hiding in the back of the cabinet! See them in all their spinning glory in this video on my Instagram feed.

If you’ve been visiting my blog for a while, then you know that I love to use every bit of available space when organizing, which is why I didn’t want to let the back corner of the cabinet go to waste. A rectangular bin filled with medicine fits perfectly behind the smaller turn table. It’s hidden back there, which I don’t mind because fortunately it’s not anything I need to use daily, but it’s easy to lift out by the handle when I have a headache or my stomach is upset.

On the other side of the pipes, I used a deep drawer bin to hold my velcro rollers and foam curlers.

The bin of curlers slides right out, almost like a drawer, making it easy for me to grab what I need. Or I can lift the whole thing out and sit in on the counter.

Oh yeah, what do you think of the daily affirmation that I added to the cabinet door?! It make me laugh every morning when I open the door, which is a great way to start the day.

I love fun and fast projects! There was a time when I used to think some of my quick project weren’t worth sharing on the blog because they were too simple, but a couple of years ago I shared a super fast update I made to my bathroom canisters, and people went crazy for it!

I think that was the first time I realized that everyone loves a quick and easy project. Duh! Of course you do! We don’t always have a lot of free time, let alone a big budget, but we can all squeeze out five minutes while we wait for water to boil or while we chat on the phone with mom. That’s why Five Minute Friday was born – to help you find ways to make the most of those few spare moments, whether it be to make something a little prettier or a little more function… or better yet, both!

With that in mind, I thought it would be fun today to look back at that first five minute project that started it all, as well a couple more ways that I’ve updated other canisters in our house with washi tape for stylish and functional organization.

A couple of years ago, I had my eye on some new canisters for the master bathroom, but I knew eventually we’d be doing a major reno project and wanted to hold off on buying new canisters until then {we finally got around to that graphic glam bathroom makeover this spring}. Since I wasn’t ready to spend any money at that time, I decided to dress up my existing canisters with something I already had on hand – silver washi tape.

I created stripes on the canisters using the washi tape – with each piece of tape overlaping slightly in the back. I ensured that each stripe started and ended in the same place, allowing me to turn the overlaps out of view.

And when I was done – less than five minutes later – my canisters had a whole new look!

I used them in the bathroom for two years after adding the washi tape, and it never peeled off. They looked just now as they did then. I’m no longer using them in the bathroom {because they were replaced with new beauties from CB2}, but I’ve relocated themto my husband’s closet where we’re using them to store collar stays and similar small items.

Last fall when I was planning our laundry closet makeover, I had visions of black and white stripes dancing in my head, but since the laundry closet doesn’t have a lot of room for decor, I had to find ways to incorporate the stripes into my functional items.

I started by adding some striped washi tape to the edges of the shelves {be sure to read that tutorial if you want to try it, because they’re is a trick to getting it to stick!}

I also added the same black and white striped washi tape to two different sets of canisters to create stylish storage for all of my laundry room essentials.

First up, I bought 8 BURKEN jars with lids from IKEA for the bargain price of $2.99 each. I compared my roll of washi tape the jar lid and determined it was exactly the same width. I love when things work out that way! I quickly added one strip of washi tape around the top of each jar.

I then filled the jars with my small laundry supplies, including my favorite tool for removing pills from sweaters, my mesh bags for washing delicate items, stain remover wipes and pens, and packets of HE washing machine cleaner.

The other four jars contain sewing and mending related supplies, including a measuring tape and small scissors, thread {including those little packets of mending thread that sometimes come with your clothes}, extra buttons, and needles and pins.

<img decoding="async" alt="Sewing Kit Canisters with Washi Tape Lids" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/BlueiStyle-LaundryRoomSewingKitCanisters.jpg" title="Use canisters to create easy sewing kits in the laundry room, with storage for extra buttons, thread, pins and needles and more.

I placed all of my new canisters in two of the Elfa Utility Large/Deep Baskets that we mounted on the back of our laundry closet door using an Elfa mounting rail. Using the back of doors is one of my favorite ways to maximize storage space, and since these doors are open in our hallway much of the time, I love that the washi tape on the canister lids make the storage look a little more stylish!

<img decoding="async" alt="Laundry closet back of door storage canisters" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/BlueiStyle-LaundryClosetCanistersOnDoor.jpg" title="Use the back of the doors in the laundry closet to double your storage!

After organizing most of my laundry essentials in the baskets on the back of the door, I had two containers that were too large for this space – my my laundry detergent pods and my OxiClean. For these, I purchased two larger kitchen canisters from Target. The lids of these canisters were much taller than those on my small canisters, but I still wanted to add the washi tape detail, so this time I used two rows of overlapping tape, being careful to keep the stripes aligned.

<img decoding="async" alt="Laundry detergent in canisters with washi tape detail" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/BlueiStyle-LaundryDetergentInCanistersOnCounter.jpg" title="Store laundry pods and laundry detergent in canisters for easy access.
I love the way that, with the addition of the washi tape, these canisters now coordinate perfectly with my lidded, striped jute basket, which serves as a lint collector. If you are looking for other laundry closet storage solutions, I have got lots of tips and tricks.

It feels like too long since we’ve talked organizing around here. But that’s about to change, starting today! You know by now that I’m all about balancing function and style. I love to make my spaces pretty, but they also need to be practical!

This is why I’ve never been a big fan of pedestal sinks. They look pretty, but I find them to be so impractical. Where are you supposed to store anything?

For years, this has been my dilemma in our basement bathroom. Where do I keep the extra toilet paper so that it’s readily accessible? Where do I keep the extra towels? Where can I stash a few diapers and wipes so that I don’t have to run up two flights of stairs to the nursery every. single. time?

I finally came up with a simple solution! It was one of those, “why didn’t I think of this sooner?” moments. Only it didn’t turn out to be quite that easy.

I have always loved IKEA’s RASKOG rolling carts, and I have a couple around the house that I use for craft and project supplies. It finally occurred to me that one of these carts might fit nicely below the pedestal sink. I measured the space to confirm, then made a quick trip to IKEA {if there is such a thing}. I brought the cart home, assembled it, and then rolled it in the bathroom. Only it didn’t fit! WHAT?!

It was about an 1/8th of an inch to tall. I guess I didn’t measure quite precisely enough. Dang it!

My first thought was to buy a slightly smaller cart somewhere else. I had seen similar carts at World Market and Target. But the prices blew me away. I paid $30 for my IKEA cart and similar carts at other stores were averaging $99!

Ok, so I needed to make my IKEA cart work somehow! I considered running to the hardware store to look for smaller casters that could replace the wheels on the cart to make it slightly shorter. But then it occurred to me that I didn’t really need the cart to roll.

If I placed it between the pedestal sink and the toilet {rather than on the other side of the sink, where I had originally pictured it}, then I could easily access all of the “shelves” of the cart without needing to roll it out. I took off the wheels, and sat the cart in place. It was a perfect fit!

<img decoding="async" title="Pedestal sinks look nice, but where are you supposed to store anything?

I folded a few bath-sized towels and placed them on the top shelf of the cart, along with an extra hand towel.

<img decoding="async" title="Use an IKEA Raskog cart to create extra storage next to a pedestal sink in a small bathroom.

I tucked five extra rolls of toilet paper on the middle shelf, and then used the bottom shelf for diapers, wipes, and diaper cream.

<img decoding="async" title="Pedestal sinks look nice, but where are you supposed to store anything?

The cart fits perfectly between the sink and toilet without crowding either one.

<img decoding="async" title="Pedestal sinks look nice, but where are you supposed to store anything?

I bet you never knew that we had a BRIGHT orange bathroom in our basement! That’s because I’ve been a bad-blogger and never shared a full tour of our basement before {which includes a large family room and a bedroom that we use as an office, in addition to the under stair playroom}.

<img decoding="async" title="Pedestal sinks look nice, but where are you supposed to store anything?

This vibrant orange bathroom is a fun and unexpected extension of our grey, white and orange basement decor {but I wouldn’t recommend orange paint for a bathroom where you put on your makeup, because the paint color definitely distorts how you see your complexion in the mirror}.

The basement bathroom is in need of a new mirror, and some kind of art above the toilet, but at least it is now much more functional! It’s so much nicer having these necessities inside the bathroom, rather than stored in a hall closet out of reach when you need them!

UPDATE: We have BIG plans for this little bathroom! The orange walls will soon be white, and we’ve picked out a new blue vanity {affiliate link} that will add both function and style to this space. I won’t be sad to see the pedestal sink go, and the rolling cart will certainly find a home in another room of our house!

Of course, the storage challenge is not limited to bathrooms with pedestal sinks! Upstairs, in the small bathroom that our boys share, there is a cabinet below the sink, but the pipes take up almost the entire cabinet leaving little usable space.

<img decoding="async" title="Pedestal sinks look nice, but where are you supposed to store anything?

That bathroom is so small that there isn’t even enough floor space for a cart like I added to the basement bath, so I had to get even more creative by thinking outside the box…or rather, outside the bathroom. You can read all about how I solved that tiny bathroom storage problem in this post.

The last three weeks, my friend Melissa, from A Prudent Life, and I have been asking you to share your organized spaces with us on Instagram using the hashtag #organizingwithstyle. Week 1 was all about baskets and bins, week 2 we tackled laundry room organization, and this week, we are concluding with stylish organization tips for the bathroom!

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite bathroom organization ideas, and we hope you’ll be inspired!

This serene, white bathroom from Back to Blueberry Hill proves that organizing doesn’t have to be complicated. She has used two pretty canisters on the counter to hold cotton balls and q-tips, and the addition of a narrow shelf above the sink gives her space for additional items without cluttering up the counter top. An organized space should make it easy for everyone to find what they need, and her clear containers do just that!

The bathroom between our boys’ bedrooms doesn’t have a tub, so we instead bathe them in the bathroom attached to our guest room. The boys have lots of bathtub toys that used to wind up piled on the edge of the tub, and by the time they were finally dry enough to put away, it was bath time again. I finally came up with a simple but stylish solution by hanging cute, labeled buckets from a long rail. Holes drilled in the bottom of the buckets allow the toys to be put away wet and still dry properly. And when we have guests in town, we can simply swap out the buckets for more grown-up options that give the bathroom a spa-like feel.

Here’s another great idea for next to the tub! Michelle uses a pretty, tiered basket to keep all of her bath and moisturizing products neatly contained. A basket is always a great way to keep like items organized and to combat the clutter that can form on a counter top or around the edge of a tub. A basket like this would also work great between his and hers sinks if drawer space is limited!

Melissa is fortunate to have a closet right in her bathroom – but sometimes the larger the storage space, the more disorganized it can become. After becoming frustrated that the closet had become a cluttered mess, Melissa took control and put some simple organizing systems in place that have stood the test of time. Photo boxes are the perfect inexpensive organizing container. In the bathroom, they are great for non-daily items, like extra razors and travel size bottles you are saving for your next trip.

Wash clothes never seem to stay neatly piled, so in the lower half of that same closet, Melissa has used a drawer to keep them tidy. As a bonus, the plastic storage drawer works as a divider for stacks of towels, which prevents them from tipping over.

A tray is always a great way to keep items contained and to make the counter look organized rather than cluttered. Quarters on Conservatory found that paper towels are a better solution for her boys, because hand towels were getting filthy fast! By putting the paper towel holder on the tray, it all has a cohesive look.

You’ve heard me talk many times before about the importance of using every available space for organizing – including the back of doors. And this applies to the inside of cabinet doors as well. The bathroom that our boys share has only a tiny cabinet below the sink {taken up largely by pipes}. To take full advantage of the available storage space, I affixed a cute metal bin to the inside of the door using Command strips. The sections of the bin hold their tooth brushes, wash clothes, and combs – all items that we want the boys to be able to reach by themselves as they learn to help with the morning and evening routines.

Because the storage space in the boys bathroom is so limited, I had to get creative and think outside the box – or rather, outside the bathroom. I placed a cute, striped cabinet in the hallway just outside the bathroom that I use to store extra towels, their humidifier, and other toiletries that don’t fit inside the small cabinet under the bathroom sink.

Here’s another great idea for the inside of a bathroom cabinet door – Crafting in the Rain used PVC pipes to create an ingenious storage solution for her kids’ toothbrushes! And, of course, I love the adorable labels!

A Prudent Life also uses the inside of her cabinet door for storage! Plastic BYGEL bins from IKEA aren’t just for rail systems. Mounted to a cabinet door with Command Strips, they can keep Melissa’s daily use items handy, but hidden.

The cabinet under Melissa’s sink is just as organized as the back of her cabinet door! She notes that hair and beauty products can quickly overtake a bathroom countertop, but shoving them all under the sink often means you forget what you have. To combat this problem, she used a tiered spice rack to keeps everything visible. This system also gives here a limit – if the rack is full, something has to go before she makes another purchase!

Finally, who doesn’t love to the chance to peek inside someones drawers?! Here’s a glimpse inside mine… We are fortunate to have quite a few drawers in our bathroom, so I was initially tempted to divide them up – his and hers, if you will. But I instead decided to group like items together and to organize them by frequency of use. This top drawer includes many of the basic items that we both use daily, like toothbrushes, deodorant, contacts, and glasses. Plastic bins make it easy to quickly put everything back in place. Lining the drawers with a fun, adhesive shelf paper and adding pretty silver labels to the bins add punches of style that motivate me to keep the drawer organized. Peek inside all six of my bathroom drawers and get my top 4 bathroom drawer organization tips.

I hope you’ve enjoyed these Organizing with Style round-ups the last three weeks. That concludes our hashtag challenge for this season, but keep an eye out because this challenge will be making a comeback in the new year, and we’ll be taking on some of the major problem spots in your house, like the kitchen, garage, office, and more!

But, never fear – there will be no shortage of new organizing posts both here and at A Prudent Life in the coming months. And of course, you can always check my organizing archives for LOTS more practical and stylish inspiration!

I organized our master bathroom drawers shortly after we moved into our house six years ago, and I must have done something right, because the drawers are just as organized today as they were on day one. That almost never happens!! Usually I have to reevaluate every so often and tweak the system to better suit our changing needs. But somehow I managed to get our bathroom drawers right on the first try!

Obviously, what’s right for us won’t necessarily be right for you, but I can share a few pointers…

{1} HIS & HERS: GET IT TOGETHER

If you live with a significant other, my number one piece of advice for organizing toiletries in your bathroom drawers is to get it together! My husband and I are extremely fortunate to have a whopping six drawers in our master bathroom, two columns of three drawers which are centered between our two sinks.

With this configuration, it would have been really easy for me to allocate the three drawers nearest my sink for my toiletries, and the three nearest my husband’s sink for his. But I didn’t do this for two reasons. First, I have a lot more “stuff” than the mister, making an even split of drawers illogical. Second, and more importantly, this wouldn’t have been the most efficient use of our space.

Especially if you’re limited on space, I highly recommend forgoing the his and hers approach in favor of combining like items. You each have a toothbrush and deodorant – so why take up twice the space by storing these items separately in your “own” drawers?

Instead, get it together! Start by grouping all of your toiletries by category. You’ll find that some categories contain items that you both use, while other categories will be specific to just one of you.
And some categories may also require further division. For example, to organized my makeup, I separated it into three categories. {Read the details of my makeup drawer organization}

{2} CONSIDER YOUR DAILY ROUTINE

Once you determined the categories of toiletries that you need to store in your bathroom drawers, the next step is determining what goes where. For this, I recommend a top down approach. Think about your daily routine. Those items that your use every day should go in the top drawer {or drawers, in our case}. For us, the daily items are our toothbrushes and toothpaste, hair brushes, deodorant, contacts and contact solution, and glasses {for evenings after our contacts come out}. I also wear makeup on a daily basis.

In our case, since we have two columns of drawers, I use the top drawer closest to my sink for my makeup and brush, and the top drawer closer to my husband’s sink stores all of the remaining daily items that we both have in common.

The next drawers down contain the items that one or both of us use frequently, but not daily, including: extra razors; extra contacts, eye drops, and glasses care items; hair accessories; nail files and clippers; and nail polish. {Read about my organized nail polish}

And the bottom two drawers – well those are all mine, and they store items that are used occasionally, including my hair dryer, curling irons, curlers, and feminine products. Since we have extra space, I also keep a few extra rolls of toilet paper in one of the bottom drawers.

<img decoding="async" alt="Organized Bathroom Drawers" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/blueistyle-TipsOrganizingToiletriesBathroomDrawers7.jpg" title="GET ORGANIZED in the bathroom with these 4 simple tips!

{3} CONTAIN IT TO MAINTAIN IT
Once you’ve categorized and prioritized your toiletries, the key is contain items within appropriately sized containers. When everything has a designated and separate space, it’s easier to put things away than not. For my bathroom drawers, my go-to containers are the Viola Drawer Organizers and Seamless Tins from The Container Store.

<img decoding="async" alt="Supplies for bathroom drawer organization" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/blueistyle-TipsOrganizingToiletriesBathroomDrawers8.jpg" title="GET ORGANIZED in the bathroom with these 4 simple tips! Drawers full of toiletries can quickly become disorganized, but with these tips you'll learn how to organize bathroom drawers in a way that's easy to maintain and easy to share with a partner or spouse!
I use a combination of the small and medium-sized Viola bins for our toiletries. If you plan to use these bins, be sure to measure your drawers carefully because the medium bin is not only wider, but also slightly taller than the small bin. Both sizes fit nicely in our bathroom drawers, but our kitchen drawers are not quite as deep, making the medium Viola bins just a bit too tall.

<img decoding="async" alt="Nail polish drawer organization" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/blueistyle-OrganizeNailPolishInDrawer9.jpg" title="GET ORGANIZED in the bathroom with these 4 simple tips!
The Viola bins are perfect for corralling most of our toiletries, but for smaller items I rely on the Seamless Tins. The 8 oz. tins are perfect for my hair accessories, such as bobby pins and hair ties, while the the 16 oz. tins work great for slightly larger items, such as nail clippers and tweezers, and the accessories for my husband’s beard trimmer.

Using containers to divide items within our drawers has been key to maintaining our organizing system for all of these years! I certainly don’t keep my makeup or other toiletries perfectly organized within each of bins at all times, but by always tossing each item back into the appropriate bin, the basic organizing system remains intact and I can always quickly find what I need.

{4} MAKE IT PRETTY TO KEEP IT PRETTY

This last step is optional, but in all of our organizing systems, I find that making it pretty at the outset helps me to keep it pretty for the long haul! If you have trouble keeping up with your organizing systems, I highly recommend taking an extra few minutes to dress things up a bit. You might just be surprised at how it motivates you to put things back where they belong so that you can continue to enjoy the beauty of your organized space.

The easiest way to make a drawer pretty is with some self-adhesive shelf liner. Much to my husband’s chagrin I chose black and silver leopard print. But since very little in our home is overly girly, he just shrugged it off. You can also use decorative wrapping paper to line drawers, but for the bathroom, I find the wipeable, durable surface of real shelf liner to be preferable.

Since all the silver tins look just the same with their lids on, I used some adorable black and white leopard washi tape to label the contents of the tins. I wrapped a piece of tape around each tin, and then used my trusty label maker to print out clear labels with black writing that I layered on top of the tape.

<img decoding="async" alt="Organizing small items in bathroom drawers" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/blueistyle-TipsOrganizingToiletriesBathroomDrawers14.jpg" title="GET ORGANIZED in the bathroom with these 4 simple tips!
I also purchased some silver adhesive shelf liner and used my Cricut to cut labels for the bottom of each of my bins. This is the part that made my husband think I was a bit nutty since the bins are full of stuff most of the time. And I’ll admit that this was really more for my own personal satisfaction than anything else. What can I say? I love to label! But in my defense, while it’s true that some of the labels won’t be seen often, other of the labels are seen daily – like every time we take our toothpaste or contact solution out of the drawer.

And while your making things pretty in the bathroom, here’s another quick tip: use washi tape to dress up boring canisters on your counter top for items like cotton ball and swabs.

<img decoding="async" alt="Washi Tape updates glass canisters" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/blueistyle-WashiStripedBathroomCanisters15.jpg" title="GET ORGANIZED in the bathroom with these 4 simple tips! Drawers full of toiletries can quickly become disorganized, but with these tips you'll learn how to organize bathroom drawers in a way that's easy to maintain and easy to share with a partner or spouse!
No matter how many bathroom drawers you have to work with, you’ll be able to make the most efficient use of your space by grouping like items together, keeping the toiletries you use daily within easy reach, and corralling items in appropriately sized containers. Then consider adding a few pretty details, like drawer liners and stylish labels to motivate yourself to keep things looking good.

With spring official here, I am itching for warmer weather – mostly because I love wearing sandals and flip flops! Although I don’t paint my fingernails all that often (something I’d like to change) – I ALWAYS have my toenails painted and I can’t wait to start sporting some spring colors! So to get ready for the warmer weather that will hopefully be headed our way soon {but not soon enough since the forecast calls for snow tomorrow}, I decided to organize all of my nail polish.

I have a slight obsession with putting things in color order, and when I go to a salon, it makes me giddy to stand in front of the display shelves with all of the bottles of nail polish lined up and looking pretty. But at home, I store my nail polish in a drawer where all I could see were the tops of the bottles. While my nail polish collection is not that large, I still found it frustrating to be constantly lifting bottles out of the drawer searching for the color I wanted.

I wanted to label each bottle to make it quick and easy to find the right color. I originally thought about using a cotton swab to paint a dot on the top of each of my bottles, but it turns out that nail polish doesn’t stick well to the lids. Stickers were the obvious next choice. Some of my bottles already had stickers on the top that identified the color name, so I peeled off these labels and re-stuck them to the sides of the bottles.

To create colored label my nail polish bottles, I wanted to use supplies I already had around the house. I grabbed a sheet of mailing labels from my home office and painted a large dot of each polish color on to the white mailing labels.

Some of the colors required painting a second coat in order to get a good, solid color. As I continued to paint a dot of each color, I kept the bottles lined up in the same order so that I didn’t get the colors mixed up.

After the nail polish was dry, I used a hole punch to cut out a circle of each polish color.

Then I simply stuck each sticker to the lid of the corresponding bottle.

Once all of my polish bottles were labeled, I arranged them in color order – which makes my OCD-side oooohhh so happy!!

Labeling my nail polish bottles was such a quick and easy organizing project, but it makes such a huge difference! It’s so much easier now to find what I am looking for without having to lift out each bottle. It’s also helpful because often times nail polish colors look different dry than they do in the bottle, so these little labels allow me to see the true colors. The only two bottles that I didn’t label are the ones that contain my clear top coats – and the lack of labels now make these bottles easy to spot as well.

I have always stored my nail polish in a plastic bin within a bathroom drawer, all the while wishing I had the space to store them on cute display shelves where I could see all the colors at a glance. Now I feel like I have the best of both worlds! My newly labeled bottles allow me to quickly see all of my colors, and it’s also convenient to be able to lift the container out of the drawer and take all of my polish with me if I want to use it in another room.

Of course, I have other nail care supplies that I store in this drawer, including files and clippers, as well as nail polish remover. Next week I’ll be over at Pretty Well Organized sharing some tips for organizing toiletries in bathroom drawers, and I’ll be revealing the rest of my nail care drawer at that time, so be sure to check it out!

I am a big fan of Jen’s blog over at IHeartOrganizing, and in March she challenged us all to tackle linen and loo organizing projects. In my last post, I shared with you my new system for organizing the bathtub toys in our guest “loo” and now I want to share with you a couple of solutions for the lack of storage space in another bathroom.

Just off of Beckett’s nursery, and just down the hall from where his new “big boy” room will be, is a small bathroom. This bathroom doesn’t get a ton of use right now, but, as our kids get older, I know it will become much more of a high traffic area.

The only storage in the bathroom is the very small floating cabinet below the sink, and the majority of the cabinet is taken up by pipes. Someday I envision that we’ll install a new mirror that incorporates some form of storage for toothbrushes and the like, but for now, I want to keep the storage at a level that Beckett can actually reach. To make the most of the small cabinet, I decided I should be using the inside of the door. I looked at numerous options, and ultimately settled on the cute “Things Bin” from the Land of Nod.

I used four Command velcro strips to attach the bin to the door, which will make it easy to remove or reposition in the future.

Beckett already has a strong independent streak, and likes to be able to do things on his own. By installing the bin on the door right at his level, we can encourage this independence. Each night when we tell him it’s time to brush his teeth he toddles in to the bathroom, opens the cabinet and grabs out his toothbrush and toothpaste. A toddler who willingly brushes his teeth? Yes, please!

While this bin is helping us make the most of the tiny bathroom cabinet, and while Beckett doesn’t need much in the bathroom for now, we know there will come a day when the storage space in this cabinet won’t be sufficient. There is not enough floor space in this small bathroom to add any other kind of storage cabinet, and because there are two doors into the bathroom, there is no availble wall space except above the toilet. But then I thought – why does the bathroom storage have to be in the bathroom?

Just outside of the bathroom is a wide hallway area that was not serving any real function, and which had plenty of space for a piece of furniture that could house some additional bathroom storage. I found a great little painted cabinet on clearance at Pier 1 and couldn’t pass it up. It’s both cute and functional!

And best of all, the inside is painted teal – to die for!

The cabinet has an adjustable shelf inside, which will allow it to adapt to our changing needs as our kids grow up.

For now, this cabinet is housing extra towels, a bin of baby soaps and lotions, and our cute elephant humidifier.

Since the humidifer always tends to drip a little bit of water, I picked up two melamine trays from the Container Store to protect the bottom of the cabinet.

The moral of the story – bathroom storage does not have to be in the bathroom to be functional.

This cabinet, just outside of the bathroom, serves the dual purpose of providing additional bathroom storage that will be able to grow and adapt with our kids, and also provides some added style in what was previously an empty hallway.

Keep your eye out for a future blog post about the artwork above the cabinet and the remainder of the decor in this hall area.

Stylish bathtub toy storage that allows water to drain and toys to dry properly. Easily converts to luxurious organization for guests.">

Bath time with a toddler is so much fun! At almost 15 months old, Beckett is now really starting to enjoy playing with toys in the tub, but with that comes the challenge of storing all those toys. There is a small bathroom right off of Beckett’s nursery, but it only has a shower. That means that bath time occurs down the hall in the bathroom attached to our guest room.

We have plenty of storage space in the bathroom cabinet, but the problem was that by the time the tub toys finally dried, and I got around to putting them away in the cabinet, it was time for another bath. As a result, the toys ended up living on the edge of the tub most of the time.

I had been searching for a new tub toy storage solution – one that would allow the toys to be quickly picked up and put away after bath time, even when still wet. While shopping at Ikea a while back, it occurred to me that the Grundtal rail system could be just the answer. I liked the coordinating white plastic Grundtal containers that are made to hang from the rail – but at $10-$16 each they were more than I wanted to spend. After a bit more searching around the store, I discovered that the Rationell Recycling Bins also fit onto the Grundtal rail, and at only $3.99 each they are a much better deal (these bins are no longer showing up on the Ikea website, but the Colorado store had a large inventory just a month ago). Update: These white bins are showing up on the Ikea website once again, but are now being called the Rationell Waste Sorting Bins.

We decided to install the Grundtal rail just above the tiled tub surround, making sure it was positioned such that when hung from the rail, the bottom of the white bins would just overlap the top of the tile. Scott started by inserting an anchor and screw at the top left of the rail, then, after leveling the rail, he marked the locations for the remaining three screws and finished the installation.

Because we want to be able to put the toys away while they are still wet, and allow them to properly dry, Scott used a small drill bit to drill numerous holes in the bottom of the bins so that all the excess water will drain right out.

Once holes were drilled in the first bin, we hung it from the rail and filled it full of water to test it out. We discovered that because of the angle at which the bins hang, some water was pooling along the front edge. Scott drilled one more row of holes right along that bottom front corner of the bin and that easily solved the problem.

Once all the holes were drilled, I hung the five bins from the rail and quickly realized that while they were perfectly functional, I wanted to add a little something-something to make them prettier. I decided to add fun bath related words to the front of the bins, and settled on: splish, splash, wash, bath, and scrub. {Click here for details on how I made the labels}

With the bins labeled, I hung them back on the rail and filled them with all of Beckett’s tub toys, as well as baby shampoo, body wash, and wash cloths. Quick, and simple, but oh-so-stylish tub toy storage!

<img decoding="async" alt="Stylish bath tub toy storage" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/blue-i-style-BathtubToyStorage1.jpg" title="GREAT FOR KIDS & ADULTS!

<img decoding="async" alt="Stylish bath tub toy storage" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/blue-i-style-BathtubToyStorage2.jpg" title="GREAT FOR KIDS & ADULTS!

The bins hang securely on the rail, and are very light weight and easy to lift off.

<img decoding="async" alt="Bath tub toy storage" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/blue-i-style-BathtubToyStorage3.jpg" title="GREAT FOR KIDS & ADULTS!

And the bins provide ample storage for all of Beckett’s bath time toys!

<img decoding="async" alt="Stylish Bath Tub Toy Storage" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/blue-i-style-BathtubToyStorage4.jpg" title="GREAT FOR KIDS & ADULTS!

By installing the rail just low enough so that the bottom of the bins overlaps the tile ensures that we can put the away wet toys and the excess water will drain out without getting anything wet that shouldn’t be.

<img decoding="async" alt="Bath tub toy storage" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/blue-i-style-BathtubToyStorage5.jpg" title="GREAT FOR KIDS & ADULTS!

I love our new bathtub toy storage, but best of all, when we have guests visiting, the Grundtal rail can quickly transform from toddler fun to guest luxury!

When friends come to visit, we want them to be comfortable and relaxed in the guest bathroom, and while bath tub toys are fun, they don’t exactly scream relaxation. So to transform the rail for guests, we can quickly stash away the bins of toys in favor of more grownup bath time essentials.

Since the guest bathroom doesn’t have a towel bar, the Grundtal rail provides the perfect spot to hang a towel by the tub. One Ikea Grundtal S-hook holds a loofah, while two more S-hooks hold a Polytherm Shallow Basket from the Container Store, which provides ample space for a bar of soap, body wash and lotion.

<img decoding="async" alt="Bath tub organization" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/blue-i-style-GrundtalRailForGuestBath2.jpg" title="GREAT FOR KIDS & ADULTS!

And there you have it… the solution to our bathtub toy storage challenge that also met the requirement of being stylish enough for guests. Here’s the complete transformation:
