If your family has a lot of puzzles, then you know how much space they take up on a shelf. For the past few years, I’ve been organizing our puzzles using an easy, space-saving method, and I decided it was time that I share my tip for how to store jigsaw puzzles.

My kids have aged into more challenging puzzles, so we donated most of their “little kid” puzzles. They recently got quite a few new puzzles for Christmas and birthdays, so I decided it was the perfect time for me to show you my favorite storage solution for kids’ puzzles.

This is the stack of puzzles that I started with. That black box actually had five separate puzzles in it, and I knew it was going to be a mess with the pieces all mixed up if I didn’t do something about it soon!

This post contains some affiliate links. If you purchase something I recommend, you’ll pay the same price, but I may receive a small commission.

Years ago, I saw someone suggest storing puzzles in gallon-sized Ziploc bags and it sounded like a great idea, until I tried it. I liked that I could see easily see the puzzle pieces inside, but the bags were floppy and slippery, making it really hard to efficiently store them in a basket or bin without them just ending up in a pile.

Additionally my kids had a hard time securely closing the bags, so puzzle pieces would end up spilling out and I’d find myself reorganizing them over and over again.

After this experience, I went on the hunt for a similar – but better – way to organize my kids’ puzzles. I purchased and returned a few different options before I finally found these pouches that work perfectly because you can still see through them, but they are stiff enough to hold their shape, making them much easier to store and organize!

Purchased individually, the best deal I’ve found on these pouches is at The Container Store, but if you want to buy them in a larger quantity, you can get a great deal on sets of 16 or sets of 24 with a variety of rainbow colored zippers Amazon.

I’ve found that the Letter Size pouches are perfect for storing all of our jigsaw puzzles. The ones I’ve shown here are between 100 and 500 piece puzzles, but 1000 piece puzzles fit in these puzzles just as well because the pieces are smaller.

The larger legal size pouches work great for storing wooden kids’ puzzles and some larger preschool puzzles.

This is a quick and easy organizing project. Start by cutting the picture off of the front of the boxes.

Place the puzzle photo in the front of the pouch so that you can see which puzzle is inside at a glance, and then store the puzzle pieces behind the photo.

It’s easy to see how much space it saves to store jigsaw puzzles in these pouches. So much thinner than in the box!

Once you’ve transferred all of your puzzles from their boxes to the zippered pouches, you can file them into a basket or bin.

I love a good before and after, so here’s a side by side comparison to prove why this is the best way to store kids’ puzzles!

The puzzles fit perfectly in a basket, but let me show you where we are actually storing ours. The kids have a play table in the basement with a storage space built in under the table that’s the perfect size for our bags of puzzles. We’ve had this table for ages, and it’s no longer available where we bought it, but here’s a similar table.

Even though the sides of the storage bin under the table aren’t very high, you can see that the bags stay upright on their own – no flopping over like you’d have with Ziploc storage bags. This makes it so easy for my kids to flip through the puzzles to find the one they want to work on. And the zippers make it easy for them to put the puzzle away when they are done.

Here’s another fun side by side, space saving comparison…

This is a really quick and easy organizing project. It only takes about five minutes to transfer a stack of puzzles into the zippered pouches.

When designing my boys’ shared bedroom, I wanted to create a space that was stylish and fun, but also comfortable and functional! I added tons of storage for all their toys and books – low shelves that wrap the corner, a stylish cabinet on the other side of the room, and even hidden drawers in the bunk bed stairs.

But with both boys in elementary school now, art and school papers were starting to pile up on every surface. Each week, the boys and I go through their papers to decide what is important to keep and what can be recycled. I want them to be part of the process, and I don’t want to get rid of anything that feels important to them, but it usually turns out that it’s almost all “very important” in the moment.

I’ve discovered that we’re better off keeping most of their art and papers until the end of each semester, and then when we sort through it after a little time has passed, it’s much easier for them to choose just their favorites and the work they are most proud of. In order to make this system work, I decided to take advantage of the wall space in the corner of their room to give the kids a new place to display their art and keep their school papers organized.

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a quick organizing tip for Five Minute Friday, but I’m definitely in the mode of back to school organizing, and this new kids art display and paper organization project was so fast and easy!

You already know that I’m a huge proponent of using vertical space to add function around the house, so the empty wall space in the corner of the boys room, behind their bathroom door, had been calling out to me for a while!

A few months ago, I found some adorable animal magnets and I bought them with the idea of creating a magnetic art display in the boys room.

I purchased two magnetic strips for the wall to display art, but then after seeing the other school papers piling up at the start of the school year, I realized I needed a system for the papers too. I looked a few wall filing options, and decided on two translucent file boxes with bright orange file folders {to match the other orange accents in the boys’ room}.

I love to keep things flexible, especially in kids’ rooms because their needs change so quickly. It’s why I made the orange door fronts on their bookshelf temporary {rather than painting them}, and why I always create labels for their toy bins that are fast and easy to update.

Rather than attaching the magnetic strips to the wall with the included screws, I decided to hang everything using Command Picture Hanging Strips. I use these around the house for just about every project, so I knew they would hold the weight I needed for the art display and paper filing, but will also remove cleanly when I’m ready to use this little corner for something else.

One of the keys to using Command Strips is to allow them to be on the wall for a little while before adding more weight. So after hanging everything, the boys and I sat down to sort through their art and paper and decide what to display and what to file.

After we finished sorting, we hung the art with the animal magnets and organized their papers into the orange files.

I love that the animal magnets are such a great match with the white animal knobs that we added to their bookshelves!

And I love that the finished, organized space blends so well with the overall design of their room!

This organized corner adds lots of function, but it’s still stylish enough that it doesn’t look messy or overwhelming in the corner of the room.

<img decoding="async" title="Kids' Command Center!

And when the door to their bathroom is open, it just disappears from view…

Do you ever flinch as you open one of your kitchen cabinets because you expect something to come tumbling out at your face? That was me with the cabinet where we store our water bottles. Once upon a time, I had organized the cabinet using baskets. That worked well when my boys were using mostly sippy cups, but as we transitioned to water bottles that are bigger around that the sippy cups, they no longer fit in the baskets very well, and we ended up with a scary situation like this…

I knew I needed to find a better solution, and one that would maximize the available space in our cabinet. I started by removing everything from the cabinet so that I could decide what should really make its way back in, and what we should donate.

The shelves were pretty dirty, so I quickly wiped out the dust and crumbs, and then used a magic eraser to remove the remaining scuffs and marks.

Once I’d sorted through our water bottle collection and decided what should stay and what should go, I took inventory to see how many bottles I needed to make room for.

One of the keys to keeping any space organized is to create a system that makes it easier to put things away in the right spot than to not. For our water bottles, this meant I needed a solution where each bottle had a designated spot so that we never had to rearrange things to make them fit, and where we’d never have to worry about bottles tipping over and falling out of the cabinet.

If you saw my Instagram Story last week, then you already know that the water bottle storage solution I came up with is to use some stacking wine racks! Since we have water bottles of different size and shapes, I picked these solid plastic iDesign wine holders. Most of the wood and metal options aren’t solid and would allow shorter water bottles to fall through, but these solid plastic are perfect and they come in white or clear.

I adjusted the shelves in the cabinet to allow me to stack the wine racks three high on the bottom and middle shelves.

I ended up using a total of 9 of the stacking wine racks {they’re cheaper when you buy them in sets of 2 or 4, so I have one extra that I’ll probably end up using in the fridge}.

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter" title="Water Bottle Storage solution!

I’m still using a basket on the second shelf up for some miscellaneous items that we don’t use often, but didn’t want to get rid of, like a few cups with lids and straws.

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter" title="How to organized kitchen cabinets with quick five minute organizing projects.

But all of the water bottles that we use on a regular basis, as well as a few insulated coffee cups, fit perfectly on the stacking wine racks. I love that I can see everything when I open the cabinet door, and it’s so easy to grab what I need and just as easy to put them away!

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter" title="Water Bottle Storage solution!

To get the rest of the cabinet organized, I’m using a small lazy susan for all of the boys plastic cups. I found that stacking them upside down makes them more stable, so they don’t tip over as I turn it around.

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter" title="Plastic Cup Storage Solution!

My boys can’t get enough of these super long bendy straws that can be twisted into spirals, or even tied in a knot. I grabbed an extra mason jar to keep the straws up right and in easy reach.

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter" title="Water Bottle Storage Solution!

We’ve donated all of our other sippy cups, but I do like having a few toddler cups on hand for friends and cousins when they visit. Our favorites are the dentist-recommended, spoutless Miracle Cups. They don’t stack inside each other very well, but I had just enough room left on the shelf for four of them stacked two deep.

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter" title="Store straws in a mason jar!

I always joke about how happy an organized space makes me, and that I’ll open the door just to admire it. Well, I think I’ve officially rubbed off on my husband, because Scott can’t stop opening the cabinet door and the silverware drawer {a story for another day} and smiling at the new organized situation.

<img decoding="async" class="aligncenter" title="Water Bottle Storage solution!

I love quick and easy organizing projects! There’s so much satisfaction in finding a simple solution that solves a problem and makes life a little easier! This might just be my favorite five minute organizing project of all time!

A few weeks ago we finished the organized makeover of our coat closet. It’s went from a sad combination of overstuffed and underutilized, to a super functional space with room for the whole family, plus a lot of bonus storage.

And now, thanks to one final, quick tweak, I can officially call this closet organizing project complete!

Adding an adjustable second row of hanging space for the boys’ coats – down at their level – has been a game changer. But there was one thing I failed to take into account… the boys are very similar in size, and have several matching jackets, which was making it a bit confusing, for us and for them.

The solution was a very simple one – dividers labels! All I had to do was print two labels onto sticker paper, cut them out, and attach them to plastic clothing rod dividers.

These closet rod dividers {affiliate link} are available for $.99/each at The Container Store, or in larger quantities for less on Amazon {affiliate link}. So not only did this project only take me 5 minutes… it also cost me just $2. Talk about bang for your organizing buck!

Now everyone in the family knows at a quick glance which blue fleece jacket belongs to which boy, and we can avoid the last minute, on-the-way-out-the-door-coat-swap when we realize that they are wearing one another’s coats.

This is such a simple, easy, and cheap solution – I just don’t know why I didn’t think of it in the first place. After wall, we’ve been using this same method to keep track of different sizes of clothes in the boys’ bedroom closets since the day Beckett was born.

<img decoding="async" alt="Clothing Rod Dividers" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/BlueiStyle-ClosetRodDividers-441x1024.jpg" title="SIMPLE ORGANIZING TIP!

I’ve been thinking about starting an Etsy shop to sell these cute closet rod dividers – but in the meantime, feel free to shoot me an email at blueistyleblog{at}gmail{dot}com if you are interested. I can send you pricing and various color and pattern options.

Things are getting real, today! I’m talking about what it REALLY looks like to live with kids and all their toys!

I hear from friends and readers alike that they don’t believe that our house can really look like the pretty pictures on the blog all the time, because life with kids is messy. And you know what, that’s absolutely true! My boys are just like all other kids…they leave a trail of toys and disaster everywhere they go.

But thanks to some simple organization, I can take any room in the house from toy disaster to photo ready in just five minutes {with help from the kids of course}.

A while back, after the boys had spent an entire day playing and doing what kids do best, I looked at the clock and realized that we had company coming over for dinner soon and I needed to get the toys picked up – in every room of the house. I knew that I could get things whipped into shape pretty quickly, but I decided to snap some before and after photo and keep track of how long it really took to clean up each room. I was thrilled to find that each clean up job clocked in at just about five minutes – that was thanks to help from my three year old, and in spite of the two year old who kept taking out more things as we cleaned.

So here’s your behind the scenes look at what our life with kids really looks like, and a few tips to make it easier to reclaim any room in just five minutes. And since this is real life, people, you get the iPhone photo version of the house today…

Let’s start in the basement, since this is where the biggest messes are always made.

TIP #1: PUT AWAY THE BIGGEST TOYS FIRST TO HELP CLEAR THE FLOOR

I always start by putting away the biggest things first. I stacked up the plastic chairs, moved the slide back to its spot, and put the doll house back up on the shelf. Other large toys go on the open shelves across from the play table.

<img decoding="async" alt="Toys stored on open shelves in family room" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/BlueiStyle-LargeToysOnBookShelf.jpg" title="SO HELPUL!

TIP #2: PUT KIDS IN CHARGE OF SORTING TOYS INTO DESIGNATED CONTAINERS

After all of the big toys were out of the way, I then put my three year old in charge of sorting all the different blocks. I laid out all of the empty plastic bins in a line, and put a couple of blocks in each so that he could easily see what belonged in each bin. Then I let him do the rest of the work while I cleaned up the remaining toys.

While all of the large toys go on the open shelves, and the small blocks and toys in the clear, lidded containers, the remaining medium sized and misc toys wind up in the stacked toy bins at the far end of the room.

TIP #3: GIVE EVERYTHING A PLACE, BUT DON’T OVER ORGANIZE

I love for everything to have a specific place, but I have to resist the urge to over organize the stacked toy bins. Since I know the toys will just get pulled back out the next day, there is no benefit to me spending time specifically organizing the toys within each bin. Instead, I simply group like toys together, and then toss them them in. For example, big cars and trucks always go in the bottom left bin, small car related toys go in the bottom right, and balls go in the center bin.

Of course, I could just toss the toys in the bins completely randomly, but on the occasion when I do this, I end up having a harder time getting everything to fit, and I wind up having to pull things back and out and rearrange. By grouping like items together in the same bins each time, I already know they will all fit and it saves me time in the long run.

By the time I was done putting toys away in the stacked bins, Beckett was done sorting all of his blocks and other toys into the clear containers. I snapped the lids on each and put them away in the toy cabinet.

<img decoding="async" alt="Blocks in clear, stacking containers" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/BlueiStyle-SmallToysInPlasticBins.jpg" title="SO HELPFUL!

And in just five minutes, the basement toy area went from disaster to clean!

This corner of the basement is the kids’ dedicated play space, but, of course, it’s not the only place that they play! The living room {the first room you see when entering our house} also takes a hit!

<img decoding="async" alt="Tips to clean up toys faster" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/BlueiStyle-LivingRoomToyMess.jpg" title="SO HELPFUL!

TIP #4: OUTSIDE THE PLAYROOM, LIMIT THE NUMBER OF TOYS IN EACH ROOM

We limit them number of toys in this room to those that fit in two stylish baskets, so this room actually only takes about a minute or two to clean up. Although we don’t keep that many toys in this space, I still want to encourage the kids to play in here so that I can keep a closer eye on them while cooking and doing dishes. As a result, I switch out which toys we keep in the living room toys bins from time to time to keep the kids interested.

TIP #5: MAKE CLEANING UP A GAME TO GET KIDS MOTIVATED

When it comes time to clean up the living room, I take one basket, and I put my three year old in charge of the other. We each fill our baskets as quickly as we can {making a game of it}. Since we don’t keep that many toys in this room, there is no rhyme or reason as to what goes in each bin. So long as all the trucks and stuffed animals end up inside a basket, I call it a win.

<img decoding="async" alt="Hide toys in plain sight with pretty baskets" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/blueistyle-LivingRoomToyBasket.jpg" title="SO HELPFUL!

TIP #6: HIDE TOYS & BOOKS IN PLAIN SIGHT

Because the baskets match the style of the room, they seem to fit right in despite the toys spilling out of the top. I like to refer to it as hiding toys in plain sight.

The same principal applies to the kids’ books in the living room. Before we had kids, the shelf of our coffee table used to be filled with my collection of art book, but since those coffee table books aren’t really made for little hands, we swapped them out for kid friendly versions. The coffee table shelf is now filled with kids board books – but still all about art. This way I can share my love of art with my kids in a way that helps them learn their colors, numbers, and alphabet. The books, of course wind up all over the room, but it only takes a minute to stack them back on the shelf where they are hidden in plain sight.

<img decoding="async" alt="Kids books on coffee table shelf" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/BlueiStyle-LivingRoomKidsArtBooks.jpg" title="SO HELPFUL!

After just a couple of minutes of stashing toys in baskets and stacking books on a shelf, the living room was ready for entertaining guests.

<img decoding="async" alt="Tips to clean up kids' toys faster" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/blueistyle-LivingRoomToyBaskets.jpg" title="SO HELPFUL!

And for the side by side comparison, here’s the before and after:

<img decoding="async" alt="Tips to Clean Up Kids' Toys Faster" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/blueistyle-LivingRoomToysBeforeAfter.jpg" title="SO HELPFUL!

Lastly, I needed to quickly pick up Beckett’s room. The boys spend a lot of time playing together in here, so it can become a mess in a hurry, but luckily, it can be cleaned up just as fast. Here’s what it looked like that day…

TIP #7: GIVE KIDS AGE APPROPRIATE CLEAN UP TASKS

The mess was a combination of books and toys. Beckett loves his books, but he is still young enough that he has a hard time getting all of his books back on his shelf with the spines facing forward and without pushing some books off the back of the shelf. So when we clean up his room, I put away the books, and he puts away the toys.

Beckett’s books don’t go in any special order on his shelves, which makes it quick and easy to put them away. As much as I love to organize, it’s important to be realistic about the level of organization that you can maintain. There is a part of me {the part my husband thinks is crazy} that wants to group his books by topic or color, but the fact is that I just don’t have time to reorganize them in such a detailed manner every single time I put them away. Going back to tip 3 – I have to resist the urge to over organize!

Because we also make frequent trips to the library, we always keep the library books separated in to a basket on the top of Beckett’s bookshelf. By returning books to the library book basket each time we clean up his room, we never have to search the shelves looking for the library books on the due date.

TIP #8: MAKE IT EASY FOR KIDS TO KNOW WHAT BELONGS WHERE

When we designed Beckett’s bedroom, we added enough shelf space to accommodate both books and toys. He loves sorting and putting things back in place, so the DIY numbered bins have been perfect for us. When we first organized his room, I let Beckett decide what toys would go in each bin, so now he knows, for example, that his Sesame Street playhouse and all the parts and pieces go in bin number 3, while all of his small animals go into the number 4 bin. Because he made the decision about what to put in each bin at the outset, he feels more ownership over putting his toys back in the correct bins.

TIP #9: HELP KIDS FOCUS ON THE TASK AT HAND

When we are trying to clean up his room in a hurry, Beckett sometimes gets a bit overwhelmed running back and forth from bin to bin putting away one toy at a time. When this happens, I make things easier on him {and me} by putting all of the numbered bins back on the shelf and give him just one at a time. I’ll hand him the number 4 bin, and tell him to fill it with all the animals. Once all of the animals are away, then I’ll hand him a different bin to fill. This helps him focus, and makes the clean up process much faster.

Even if all the toys are out of their bins, and books are spread all over the table and floor, between the two of us, Beckett and I can always get his room picked up in about five minutes.

TIP #10: TOYS STAY IN THE ROOM THEY CAME FROM

This last tip is definitely the most important one for making clean up quick and easy. In our house, we have a rule that toys have to stay in the room that they came from. This means that if the boys are playing in their bedrooms and decide they want to play in the living room instead, they have to leave their toys upstairs and pick different things to play with from the living room toy baskets. By keeping small baskets and bins of toys in each room of the house, there is always something new to entertain the kids, and they actually wind up playing with more of their toys than they might otherwise. I also rotate toys on occasion, which helps keep the kids’ interested!

This rule requires a lot of reminding, and, of course, sometimes results in whining, BUT it also makes life so much easier! There is no way that I could clean up all the toys in each room in just five minutes if half of the toys had to be carried up and down the stairs to reach the right rooms. As an added bonus, because toys always stay in the room that they came from, we lose far fewer!

I hope that these tips will help you to calm the toy chaos in your home, and allow you to spend more time PLAYING with your kids, and less time CLEANING up after them!

Hello from Atlanta! I’m currently at the Haven Conference hanging out with some amazing bloggers and learning a ton, but I wanted to quickly share the tutorial for one of the super easy projects from our rock & roll themed under stair playroom – the art display boards.

This post is sponsored by IKEA Centennial and Command Brand.

The under stair playroom is so narrow that I wanted to keep the floor pretty clear, and instead add function to the vertical space. On one entire wall I created an art and music gallery wall that includes four art display boards for hanging my boy’s drawings – and each display board only took about 5 minutes to make!

RIBBA Picture Frame from Ikea ($6.99)

Sheet music copied on to colored cardstock

Elmer’s Craft Bond

Scissors

Paint brushes

Mod Podge

Metal clips

Black acrylic paint

Gorilla Super Glue

Command Picture Hanging Strips

Since the playroom is rock and roll themed, I wanted to incorporate music into the art display boards, as well as using them to add some color to the white wall. I downloaded the sheet music to four different Beatles songs, and printed each song on to a different bright color of cardstock.

Then I removed the glass and backer board from the Ikea picture frame, and safely discarded the glass.

Next I used Elmer’s Craft Bond to spray that back of the pages of sheet music, adhering them to the backer board one by one.

I overlapped the pages of sheet music at different angles to create a collage effect, and let the pages stick out past the edges of the backer board.

Once the entire backer board was covered in sheet music, I turned it upside down and used a pair of scissors to trim the excess from all of the edges.

Next, I used a large paint brush to give the sheet music a quick coat of Mod Podge.

The moisture of the Mod Podge caused the sheet music to ripples in a couple of places, but as the paper dried, the ripples disappeared, leaving a nice smooth surface.

I then place the sheet music covered backer board back into the picture frame.

I picked up four metal clips on Michael’s and gave each a quick coat of black acrylic paint.

As soon as the paint on the clips was dry, I Gorilla Super Glue to glue each clip to a music covered backer board, near the top center.

Finally the art display board were ready to be hung on the gallery wall, but I didn’t want to simply hang them using a nail at the top of each, because this would have allowed them to swing from side to side if bumped by the kids. Instead, I used Command Picture Hanging Strips.

Following the instructions on the package, we were able to secure both the top and bottoms of the frames to the wall. The Picture Hanging Strips prevent the frames from swinging or moving when touched!

The other half of each strip is placed on the wall.

I used the Command Picture Hanging Strips.to hang all of the Ikea frames on the gallery wall, except for the largest poster frames {which are hung from nails, but with the picture hanging strips used to secure the bottom corners in place}.

These musical art display boards are so easy to make, and would look great with any any kind of patterned paper if sheet music is not your thing!

Today marks the conclusion of Boy Mom Madness, so it seems fitting that my Five Minute Friday project should also be for the boys.

Beckett goes to preschool two days a week, and they do an art project every day. That’s a lot of fabulous three-year old art that comes into our house! Right now I am keeping all of it in a bin, and I have ideas in mind for how I’ll decide what the keep, and how to document it without saving every piece of paper. But those are stories for other days. Today, I’m talking about displaying that art work in our home on a daily basis.

We have a magnetic chalkboard wall in our kitchen, and I like to hang the boys’ artwork right there for all to see. And while Beckett is proud to see his art in the kitchen, he often asks if he can please take it to his room. I love that he loves his room, and I love that he is proud of his art and wants it in his own space.

A few months ago I was flipping through the new Ikea catalog, and in one of the full room photos – the art display caught my eye… art hung from men’s pant hangers.

I immediately flagged the page and mentally added it to my to do list, thinking that not only would this solution inexpensive and easy, it would also a perfect fit for Beckett’s vintage preppy, menswear inspired bedroom.

A couple of weeks ago, I was in Michaels and came across an aisle display of denim craft products, and mixed in with the denim stretched canvases were some very nice looking beige linen canvases with a nail head detail around the edges. I picked up two of the large canvases and some denim supplies to make a fun organizing project for Beckett’s closet {which I blogged about earlier this week}. I was headed to the register when it dawned on me that the stretched linen canvases {in the 16×20 inch size} would allow me to create a pant hanger art display that would have a bit of a higher-end, framed out feel.

I could picture the finished project in my head, but I could quite work out the details of how I would hang the hangers on the canvas. I wandered up and down a hardware aisle waiting for something to jump out at me – and finally it did. I picked up a small package of picture hangers. So my short supply list looked like this:

SUPPLY LIST
16″x20″ stretched canvas {I used linen from Michaels}
D-Ring Picture Frame Hangers and screws {one per canvas}
Trouser Clamp Hangers
Drill or screwdriver
Command Picture Hanging Strips {the Velcro-like strips}

TUTORIAL
Attach on D-Ring Picture Frame Hanger to the top center of each canvas.

Make sure the place the picture hanger far enough forward that the D-Ring can hang down in front of the canvas,

<img decoding="async" alt="Creating Pant Hanger Art Display" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/blueistyle-Attaching-D-Ring-Picture-Hanger-To-Canvas.jpg" title="EASY & STYLISH ART DISPLAY!
With the D-Ring picture hanger in place, I was able to simply put the hanger through the ring, allowing the hanger to hang right in front of the canvas, but making it easy to take the hanger off in order to change out the art display.

To hang the canvases on the wall, I added Command picture hanging strips to the back.

<img decoding="async" alt="Hanging Pant Hanger Art Display" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/blueistyle-Command-Velcro-strips-To-Hang-Canvas.jpg" title="EASY & STYLISH ART DISPLAY!

There wasn’t a lot of available wall space in Beckett’s room for three big canvases, so I decided to create his art gallery right behind his bedroom door. We often close the door when we play in his room {his preference} and he sleeps with the door closed at night – so his art display will be visible often.

We picked three pieces of his artwork, clamped them in the pant hangers, and hung the pant hangers back on the D-Rings.

<img decoding="async" alt="Pant Hanger Art Display" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/blueistyle-Clamp-Pant-Hangers-Kids-Art-Display.jpg" title="EASY & STYLISH ART DISPLAY!

Beckett was so excited to his art on display, and the pant hangers are such a fun addition to all of the other menswear details in his room {which include 10 belts, 9 denim pockets, 33 neckties, and 1 bow tie}.

I could have certainly just hung the pant hangers directly on the wall, but I really like the way the linen canvases give this art display a more tailored and finished look. The beige linen looks nice against the light blue walls, and is a great compliment to the beige background of the argyle feature wall on the other side of the room.

<img decoding="async" alt="Pant Hanger Boy's Art Display" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/blueistyle-Clamp-Pant-Hangers-Kids-Art-Display3.jpg" title="EASY & STYLISH ART DISPLAY!

I love that Beckett enjoys art, and that he takes so much pride in his artwork! I hope that by creating this art gallery right in his room, he will be encouraged to continued creating art and expressing his creativity for many years to come!

THE most exciting thing about blogging is when someone reaches out to you and says that they were able to use an idea that you shared to create their own project! I received just such a Facebook message a few days ago from my cousin, Ali, and I loved what she did so much that I’m excited to share it with you today!

Ali has elementary age twin boys, and she recently made some adorable name tags for her boys backpacks using the cover of my fabric and paint swatch kit as inspiration. For my swatch kit, I used a medium weight chipboard to make the cover durable {since it’s always getting knock around in my purse} and attached a cute design that I printed on cardstock. I then used Mod Podge to give the cover a protective coating.

Using this same method, Ali made super durable name tags for her boys’ backpacks. I cut my chipboard and cover by hand, but Ali used her Silhouette Cameo to cut the chipboard and black cardstock for her tags. She used her Xyron Creative Station {uh oh, another crafting tool I now need!} to apply a permanent adhesive to the cardstock and affixed it to the chipboard {of course, you could simply use glue or spray adhesive}.

Ali then used her Silhouette Cameo to cut the letters of her boys names and adhered them to the tags in the same manner. If you don’t have a Silhouette, there are lots of quick and easy alternatives. You could print your kiddos’ names on a colored background using your home printer, or you could purchase cute letter stickers from your local craft store.

Once Ali had attached the letters to the name tags, she covered the tags in Mod Podge and let them dry. She says the Mod Podge finish makes the completed name tags almost feel like they are made out of vinyl, so they will surely stand up to a little rough treatment from her two active boys!

In order to attach the name tags to her boys’ backpacks, so punched a hole in each and added an eyelet using the same tool that I used to inset eyelets in my swatch book cover – the Crop-A-Dile.

If you don’t own a Crop-A-Dile, you can also set eyelets using a inexpensive eyelet setter tool available at any craft store. For more details on eyelet setting tools, and instructions on how to use them, see my swatch kit post.

Ali then looped a rubber band through each eyelet and hung the tags from her boys’ backpacks. She may replace the rubber bands with key chain rings in the future, but for now, the rubber bands are doing the trick!

Thanks, Ali, for letting me share these fabulous name tags with my readers! Happy Friday everyone!!

Happy Friday, friends! I am so excited because today I have three other fabulous ladies joining me for Five Minute Friday, and we are bringing you four back to school projects that you can complete in – you guessed it – five minutes!

Chalkboard Clipboards Featuring Kids’ Artwork

Both of my boys attend preschool two days a week in a year-round program, so we have yet to really experience a true “back to school” time in our home. But, because my younger son only recently began attending preschool, we did just go through the “start to school” process. In doing so, I gave a lot of thought to how to keep things organized for both kids.

We have a filing system for important papers, and a calendar on our pantry bulletin board for noting dates of special events and school closures, but I was struggling to keep track of the smaller things.

The school sends a full report of the boys’ activities each day, and occasionally these reports will include notes like, “bring more diapers,” or “running low on sunscreen.” Sometimes as many as five days pass between when we receive these notes and when they attend school again, so I needed a place to jot down reminders about these items.

Recently I found some cute mini clipboards at Michael’s.

The set of three was originally $24, but they were on sale half price, and I had a 25% of coupon, so I couldn’t pass them up. I thought I might hang them in the pantry by the hooks that hold the boys lunch boxes, with a little note pad on each for jotting down reminder notes.

Then when I was coloring with the boys last weekend, I was inspired to add their artwork to the clipboards, and a whole new plan was hatched.

After the boys finished their drawings, it was naptime. And while they napped, I quickly turned their art into chalkboards.

Each clipboard had a photo image clipped to it, so I removed one of these photos and traced it around my favorite portion of each boys’ scribbles.

And then I cut each out and laid them on the clipboards to see how they looked.

I love the way the bright colored paper pops against the black clipboards.

I wanted the drawings to be permanently affixed to the clipboards, so I sprayed the back of each with a coat of spray adhesive and then smoothed them in place.

Finally, I covered the front of each clipboard in a coat of clear chalkboard paint. Yep, you read that right. CLEAR chalkboard paint!

I discovered the Martha Stewart clear chalkboard paint a few months ago, and used it on my chalkboard globe with the gold detail. Ever since then, I have been dreaming up more things to turn into chalkboards…so why not my boys’ art?!

The chalkboard paint did smear the marker lines a bit, which I suspect happened because the drawings were done with washable Crayola’s. I haven’t tested it yet, but would guess that he same smearing would not occur if you used permanent markers, like Sharpies. For obvious reasons I don’t let my boys draw with anything permanent. Fortunately, the little bit of smearing didn’t bother me at all.

I covered the drawings and all of the exposed black areas on the front of the clipboards in the chalkboard paint. Don’t be alarmed that in some areas, where the paint is applied a bit thicker, it will go on looking white. But it all dries smooth and clear.

And that’s all there is to it! Each chalkboard took less than 5 minutes to make. I didn’t count the time that the boys spent coloring, of course, because they would have been doing that anyway.

Here’s the breakdown:
-Tracing and cutting out paper: 1 minute
-Affixing paper with spray adhesive: 30 seconds
-Covering art and front of clipboard with clear chalkboard paint: 3 minutes

I allowed the paint on the clipboards to dry for a full 24 hours, and then began making notes on them using a chalk bistro marker. When I need to write new notes, all I have to do is wipe the chalk away with a barely damp tissue or rag.

Just as I had originally planned, I mounted the two chalkboards on the wall of our pantry right between the hooks where we hang the boys’ lunch bags. I used two 3M Command Velcro Strips on the back of each chalkboard, with corresponding velcro strips affixed to the pantry wall.

I already keep a chalk marker in a holder next to the pantry door bulletin board, so it’s quick and easy to grab the marker and make notes on the chalkboards anytime.

I wanted to make good use of every available space in our pantry, and the addition of these clipboards does just that.

Not only are these DIY chalkboards perfect for jotting down notes and reminders for the boys’ school, they are also great for clipping up papers to be returned to school. Currently I have a class picture order form clipped to Beckett’s clipboard, and a sheet of name labels clipped to Cooper’s {since he started school just a few weeks ago, I am still working on adding these labels to all of his clothes, sippy cups, and reusable lunch containers}.

Hanging these chalkboards right inside the pantry between the lunch boxes ensures that we see them each morning as we pack the boys’ lunches, so we’ll never miss those important reminder notes.
