It’s been a long time since I’ve posted a Five Minute Friday tip, but this one is just too good not to share! I think many of us would agree that often times the hardest part about assembling IKEA furniture is opening the dang boxes. I mean, I appreciate that the boxes are really sturdy because I’ve never opened an Ikea box to find the contents inside damaged, but the glue they use makes the boxes nearly impossible tear open.

It’s one thing when you’re assembling one small thing, but when you’re assembling an entire wall of bookshelves (like I’ve done a few times recently), that big stack of ironclad boxes can seem pretty daunting! This post contains affiliate links. If you purchase something I recommend, you’ll pay the same price, but I may receive a small commission.

I’ve broken nails, given myself cardboard paper cuts, and said a few choices words @#*$! while trying to open IKEA boxes. Not only is it extremely frustrating, it also adds a lot of unnecessary time to an already time-consuming process! I’ve seen recommendations that you wedge a screwdriver, a pocket knife, or a putty knife between the flaps to open IKEA boxes, but watching the videos of these methods you can see that none of them are smooth and easy. With each of these sharp implements you run the risk of damaging the furniture inside, the floor below the box, or worst of all, your fingers!

I’ve heard people joke that IKEA should include instructions on how to open IKEA boxes. It’s funny because it’s true! But guess what?! I’ve actually got the instructions and they come straight from an IKEA employee. On a recent trip to IKEA, my husband spotted an employee opening boxes at lightning speed so he went in for the details. The employee showed him his very special tool… wait for it… a plastic lettuce knife!

If you’ve never used a lettuce knife before, it’s simply a lightweight, serrated plastic knife. Lettuce browns quickly when the leaves are torn or when sliced with a metal knife. An inexpensive lettuce knife is ideal for prepping salads because it’s serrated edge is sharp enough to provide a clean cut, and the plastic keeps the lettuce from turning brown. Additionally, these knives won’t damage counters or non-stick surfaces and they’re safe for fingers (making chopping lettuce a great task to delegate to kids who are eager to help in the kitchen).

The same characteristic that make a lettuce knife great in the kitchen apparently also make it the perfect tool to open IKEA boxes. The serrated edge slides easily through the glue between the flap and you don’t risk any damage or injury in the process! Watch this video to see just how easy it is…

This makes opening an IKEA box so quick and easy that I can’t believe this tip isn’t more widely known! I don’t know if all IKEA employees are taught to open boxes this way, or if we’ve just got some really clever folks at the store here in Denver, but either way, I’m so glad we learned this little trick! I’ll never open an IKEA box any other way!

Ok, now that your boxes are open, I guess you’ve got no excuse not to assemble that furniture! Sorry, not sorry

It’s been a while since I’ve shared a Five Minute Friday post, but this is a good one. If you’ve ever had the experience of wood drawers sticking and not sliding smoothly in an old piece of furniture, then you need to read on.

This post contains some affiliate links. If you purchase something I recommend, you’ll pay the same price, but I may receive a small commission.

A couple of months ago, my mom mentioned to me an easy way to fix sticking wood drawers. I don’t own any furniture that her tip was applicable to, but as it often happens, just about a week later, I was helping a client organize her office. She loved her newly organized drawers, but they were hard to open, making them far less practical.

I had filed my mom’s tip away in the back of my mind, I decided to give it a try to see if I could make the drawers slide more easily.

My mom recommended that paraffin wax – the kind used for canning {and manicures, ladies} – would help these wood drawers slide more smoothly, so I made a quick trip to the grocery store. Or at least I thought it would be a quick trip – but the first two stores were sold out… I finally found it at store number 3, but next time I’ll save time and buy it online.

I started by removing the drawers from the dresser…

Then I used a bar of the paraffin wax and rubbed it onto all on each surface of the drawer that touches the inside of the chest, including the sides, bottom, and the top edges. I applied firm pressure to ensure that I was applying a layer of wax to each of these surfaces.

I repeated this process doing the same on the inside of the chest – applying a layer of wax to all on the interior surfaces that touch the drawers as they slide in and out.

After applying paraffin wax to all of the drawer surfaces that could stick, I placed the drawers back in the chest to test them out. For most of the drawers, the wax did the trick and they slid much more smoothly than before.

One of the drawers slid more easily, but was still sticking. After a closer inspection, it was clear that this drawer had warped over the years, and its shape just no longer fit into the opening quite right. For this drawer, the fix required actually sanding down portions of the drawer and then applying another layer of wax to make it slide nicely. But for many of the drawers, the wax alone was all that was needed.

My number one priority for our guest room was creating a comfortable and relaxing space for our friends and family. But the reality is that our guests often need to get some work done and stay connected while they are visiting. In order to balance style and function and give our guests a work space, I chose a small, Parsons-style desk for one side of the bed instead of a traditional nightstand.

Of course, providing guests a comfortable and convenient place to work is only half of the challenge. A good WiFi connection is also a must! And to get online, guests will need the password.

Today I’ve got five quick and stylish WiFi password sign ideas, as well as a tip for getting good WiFi coverage, even in those far corners of your house.

My friend Melissa came to visit last month, and when she asked me for our WiFi password, she was met with a blank stare. Since it’s saved on both my computer and phone, I never have to type it in and honestly had no clue what it was. I assured her that when Scott got home, he’d be able to tell her. Well, Scott came home from work, and about 10 guesses later he had to go and reset the password. About an hour later we were finally able to get her online so she could finish some work, and I realized that we need to make it easier on us and our guests.

I’ve seen a lot of really cute printable WiFi password signs on Pinterest, but I wanted to come up with some other quick and stylish ways that we could display our WiFi password in the guest room. First up, my cordless lightbox. Of course, that’s not our real password, but you get the idea!

I love the look of the lightbox, but my mini one is a bit limited on space, and might not be idea if {like us} you have one of those long WiFi passwords that is a random string of letters and numbers. Next, I tried out a trendy letterboard {an idea I actually got from Melissa}.

<img decoding="async" title="Replace a nightstand with a small desk to create work space in the guest room.

This pretty gray and wood letterboard provides a lot more space to work with. I could easily put the rows closer together and fit a lot more text.

<img decoding="async" title="Use a lightbox as a guest WiFi password sign!

Everyone loves a chalkboard, right? A little chalkboard easel is a perfect place to jot down the WiFi password. And if you guest room is like mine, and all the outlets are hidden by furniture, it’s a really nice touch to provide a charging station {or “juice bar”} so guests don’t have to struggle to find a place to plug in their charging cords.

<img decoding="async" title="Replace a nightstand with a small desk to create work space in the guest room.

Since I already have a lot of framed photos from our Greek island honeymoon in the guest room, I came up with a simple way to use one of the photos to display the WiFi Password.

Dry erase markers and chalk markers work really well on glass, and can be easily wiped away. I used my Cricut electronic cutting machine to create a little vinyl decal with a WiFi symbol and a space to jot down our WiFi password.

<img decoding="async" title="Use your Cricut to turn a picture frame into a guest WiFi password sign!

This one really blends in to the decor in such a subtle way that it might need to be pointed out to your guests, but it’s definitely a stylish option!

<img decoding="async" title="Use your Cricut to turn a picture frame into a guest WiFi password sign!

Last, but certainly not least… welcome your guests with both WiFi and wine!

Earlier in the year, I used one of our honeymoon photos to make this acrylic photo-transfer tray {grab the DIY tutorial here}. Dry erase markers work on acrylic, just like on glass, so I simply sat out a bottle of Greek wine a couple of wine glasses on the tray, and then wrote the WiFi password right on the tray.

Because our house is long and thin, and spread over four levels, getting good wireless coverage has always been a challenge. My office is in the basement in one corner of the house, but I also do a lot of work in the bedroom, on the third floor in the opposite corner. My husband is our resident tech guru, and over the years he’s tried a ton of different solutions for getting good WiFi coverage throughout the house. For a while, we had a range extender to help stretch our coverage from the basement office {where the router is} all the way up to the top floor, and it was serviceable, but it also really slowed down our connection.

After years of me complaining about our slow internet and dead spots throughout the house – including the guest room – Scott went in search of a whole home system that would give us consistent coverage and better speeds. We were initially leaning toward Google Wifi, but Scott isn’t the typical impulse purchaser type of guy. So he did some research and found that both c|net {our go to for tech reviews} and PC Mag both recommended the Netgear Orbi system, which offers up to 100% faster speeds than Google WiFi, and can cover a 5,000 square foot house/yard. After we’d already settled on Orbi as our best option, Orbi offered to send us their Whole Home Wifi System to test out. As always, all opinions are 100% my own.

Like I said, Scott is the tech guru of the family, so he could probably tell you a lot more about how and why the Netgear Orbi system is so great, but my review is a lot more simple – it works REALLY well! We now have fast WiFi throughout the entire house with no dead spots. I no longer complain and curse at my computer on a daily basis, and I no longer have to apologize to our guests that there’s no WiFi in the guest room!

Oh, and most importantly {ok, so it’s not really the MOST important, but it is really important to me} the Orbi is super stylish and blends really easily with our decor. There are two matching pieces, the router {which we keep in the basement office} and the satellite {which lives in our guest room}. Both look like a sleek white vases rather than a bulky piece of hardware.

If you want a high tech solution to providing guests with your WiFi password, Orbi and Alexa have you covered! The Orbi system works in conjunction with Alexa voice-enabled products, like the Amazon Echo. You can ask Alexa to enable your guest WiFi network, or even ask Alexa to securely remind you of your WiFi password via a card to the Alexa app.

So if, like me, when it comes time to write give guests the WiFi password, you can’t remember what it is… you can simply ask Alexa and she’ll send it to you! Here’s a helpful YouTube video I found that shows you how to set it up and what voice commands to use.

<img decoding="async" title="Use the Amazon Echo to make your guest room smarter and more comfortable.

This is just one of the many ways that we are using Alexa and other simple smart home tools to make our guest room more comfortable.

I love fun and fast projects! There was a time when I used to think some of my quick project weren’t worth sharing on the blog because they were too simple, but a couple of years ago I shared a super fast update I made to my bathroom canisters, and people went crazy for it!

I think that was the first time I realized that everyone loves a quick and easy project. Duh! Of course you do! We don’t always have a lot of free time, let alone a big budget, but we can all squeeze out five minutes while we wait for water to boil or while we chat on the phone with mom. That’s why Five Minute Friday was born – to help you find ways to make the most of those few spare moments, whether it be to make something a little prettier or a little more function… or better yet, both!

With that in mind, I thought it would be fun today to look back at that first five minute project that started it all, as well a couple more ways that I’ve updated other canisters in our house with washi tape for stylish and functional organization.

This post contains affiliate links. If you buy something that I recommend, you pay the same price, but I may receive a small commission.

A couple of years ago, I had my eye on some new canisters for the master bathroom, but I knew eventually we’d be doing a major reno project and wanted to hold off on buying new canisters until then {we finally got around to that graphic glam bathroom makeover this spring}. Since I wasn’t ready to spend any money at that time, I decided to dress up my existing canisters with something I already had on hand – silver washi tape.

I created stripes on the canisters using the washi tape – with each piece of tape overlaping slightly in the back. I ensured that each stripe started and ended in the same place, allowing me to turn the overlaps out of view.

And when I was done – less than five minutes later – my canisters had a whole new look!

I used them in the bathroom for two years after adding the washi tape, and it never peeled off. They looked just now as they did then. I’m no longer using them in the bathroom {because they were replaced with new beauties from CB2}, but I’ve relocated themto my husband’s closet where we’re using them to store collar stays and similar small items.

Last fall when I was planning our laundry closet makeover, I had visions of black and white stripes dancing in my head, but since the laundry closet doesn’t have a lot of room for decor, I had to find ways to incorporate the stripes into my functional items.

I started by adding some striped washi tape to the edges of the shelves {be sure to read that tutorial if you want to try it, because they’re is a trick to getting it to stick!}

I also added the same black and white striped washi tape to two different sets of canisters to create stylish storage for all of my laundry room essentials.

First up, I bought 8 BURKEN jars with lids from IKEA for the bargain price of $2.99 each. I compared my roll of washi tape the jar lid and determined it was exactly the same width. I love when things work out that way! I quickly added one strip of washi tape around the top of each jar.

I then filled the jars with my small laundry supplies, including my favorite tool for removing pills from sweaters, my mesh bags for washing delicate items, stain remover wipes and pens, and packets of HE washing machine cleaner.

The other four jars contain sewing and mending related supplies, including a measuring tape and small scissors, thread {including those little packets of mending thread that sometimes come with your clothes}, extra buttons, and needles and pins.

<img decoding="async" alt="Sewing Kit Canisters with Washi Tape Lids" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/BlueiStyle-LaundryRoomSewingKitCanisters.jpg" title="Use canisters to create easy sewing kits in the laundry room, with storage for extra buttons, thread, pins and needles and more.

I placed all of my new canisters in two of the Elfa Utility Large/Deep Baskets that we mounted on the back of our laundry closet door using an Elfa mounting rail. Using the back of doors is one of my favorite ways to maximize storage space, and since these doors are open in our hallway much of the time, I love that the washi tape on the canister lids make the storage look a little more stylish!

<img decoding="async" alt="Laundry closet back of door storage canisters" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/BlueiStyle-LaundryClosetCanistersOnDoor.jpg" title="Use the back of the doors in the laundry closet to double your storage!

After organizing most of my laundry essentials in the baskets on the back of the door, I had two containers that were too large for this space – my my laundry detergent pods and my OxiClean. For these, I purchased two larger kitchen canisters from Target. The lids of these canisters were much taller than those on my small canisters, but I still wanted to add the washi tape detail, so this time I used two rows of overlapping tape, being careful to keep the stripes aligned.

<img decoding="async" alt="Laundry detergent in canisters with washi tape detail" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/BlueiStyle-LaundryDetergentInCanistersOnCounter.jpg" title="Store laundry pods and laundry detergent in canisters for easy access.
I love the way that, with the addition of the washi tape, these canisters now coordinate perfectly with my lidded, striped jute basket, which serves as a lint collector.

Yesterday I came across a photo slide show of the gorgeous DC home that the Obama’s will be renting when the leave the White House. I was just sitting down to write this post when I got sidetracked looking at the photos of the stunning mansion in its glorious shades of white and gray, and I had to laugh when I got to the photo of the home’s basement family room. For all its high-end style, my eye was immediately drawn to a bunch of cords under one of the tables. It truly is a universal problem!

If I’ve piqued your interest about the Obama’s future home, you’ll find a link to the slide show of more than 30 photos linked from my Facebook page. But first, let’s talk about that pesky cord problem that we all have, and a quick trick to fix it!

This post contains affiliate links. If you buy something that I recommend, you pay the same price, but I may receive a small commission. This post is not sponsored,

When designing our guest room, I really wanted to create a space that would be comfortable for our guests, day and night. Since we often have friends stay with us when they are in town for business, I thought it would be nice to give them a place to work. I was thrilled to find a coordinating white Parson’s style end table and “mini-desk”, which work perfectly as nightstands on either side of the bed.

I just love the simplicity of Parson’s style tables, with their straight, modern lines and simple shape. The only downside of this furniture style is that the open back can make hiding cords a challenge.

One of my favorite products for hiding cords are the clear Command Round Cord Clips, like those pictured below. By simply placing them every so far along the back edge of a table, and down the back of the leg, you can easily guide your cord in the direction you need to reach an outlet, while keeping it neatly out of sight. The clear adhesive strips that hold the clips in place stick firmly, but remove easily {and damage free}.

Ok, so that is my favorite way to hide cords behind a piece of furniture. But what about when you need the cord to remain accessible? Both of the lamps in my guest room have power switches on the cords {about 12 inches from where the cord leaves the lamp}.

Obviously the power switches on both lamps need to be easily accessible from the bed. In order to position the on/off switch in a convenient and easy to reach location, while still keeping the cord mostly out of sight, I used another of my favorite Command products. They are called Picture Hanging Strips, but they are good for so much more than that.

The picture hanging strips come in pairs that stick together like velcro, so I placed one strip on the back of the lamp’s power switch…

…and I attached the other half of the picture hanging strip to the side of the desk leg. I chose a spot that was easy to reach whether sitting at the desk or laying in bed.

Then all I had to do was press the two halves of the picture hanging strip together, and the on/off switch was securely held in place at the back corner of the desk. I did the same with the nightstand lamp on the other side of the bed.

At this point, I could have used a couple of Command Round Cord Clips to hold the cord in place the rest of the way down the desk leg. But the clear cord naturally hung nicely down the leg of the white desk, and because it’s positioned so close to the bed, it’s barely visible.

Ta-da! No more cord dangling behind the mini-desk.

Not only does it look nicer now, but it makes it much easier to turn the lamp on and off without having to get out of bed! Style and function – my favorite combination!

How’s that for a little five minute magic on a Friday? Now you see it, now you don’t!

If you’d like to see more of our guest room {which was inspired by a hotel where we stayed on our honeymoon in Greece}, you can take the full guest room and guest bathroom tours. I also have a post jam packed full of tips for creating a comfortable and inviting space for guests.

I also have lots of examples of ways that I’ve used Picture Hanging Strips to solve other decorating dilemmas, like layering canvases to create larger scale art and creating a record-covered feature wall.

Have a great holiday weekend, friends! I’ll be back on Monday with a tour of our summer backyard {if the rain stops long enough for me to take the photos, that is}.

I’m jealous of those with green thumbs because mine are most definitely black! Even with drip lines and automatic timers that water my potted flowers outside, I can still hardly keep anything alive. So when it comes to the indoors, I love having a vase of fresh blooms on the counter, but other than that, faux is how I roll!

I wanted to add some more color to the kitchen for spring and summer, and I envisioned some bright pink blooms {fake of course}, but unlike the tall bottles of cherry blossoms lining my kitchen table, for the sideboard I needed to come up with a display that was long and low.

This post contains affiliate links. If you buy something that I recommend, you pay the same price, but I may receive a small commission.

A couple of months ago, I came across some really fun wood crates at H&M Home, which, by the way, is totally my new favorite place to shop! About half of my master bathroom makeover that I revealed yesterday came from there as well.

But back to the crates…I knew they would make perfect planter boxes in my kitchen – the hard part was deciding which ones I really liked all the color and text options. You can check them all out here:

!function(d,s,id){var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? ‘http’ : ‘https’;if(!d.getElementById(id)) {e = d.createElement(s);e.id = id;e.src = p + ‘://’ + ‘widgets.rewardstyle.com’ + ‘/js/shopthepost.js’;d.body.appendChild(e);}if(typeof window.__stp === ‘object’) if(d.readyState === ‘complete’) {window.__stp.init();}}(document, ‘script’, ‘shopthepost-script’);

I ended up picking up two of the black crates that say “local and fresh,” but I’m still thinking of going back to get another of the “olive oil” crates for my kitchen counter to hold all of the oils and vinegars that we cook with regularly.

To turn my two new crates into flower boxes, I bought a few bricks of floral foam.

One brick filled about 3/4 of a crate, then I cut a small piece of another foam brick to fill the remaining space.

I picked up dark pink hydrangea blooms from JoAnn.

I cut the stems down to be just a bit shorter than the height of the box and trimmed the leaves from the stems.

I placed the first stem into the foam in the center of one of the crates…

Then filled with a second and third stem on each end of the box. Three stems of hydrangeas perfectly filled each crate – making them look full, but not squished.

Finally, I lifted the blooms and added a leaves at the ends of the crates.

I tried adding additional leaves, but discovered that they just covered up the lettering, which I didn’t want to do.

I love the way these quick and easy indoor flower boxes add a bright pop of color to the kitchen, and I’m happy to know that they’ll look great all through the spring and summer and there is nothing my black thumb can do to kill them!

The rough, natural texture of the wood and the stenciled lettering of the H&M crates creates a nice contrast against out sleek glass sideboard and modern decor.

Last spring, I came up with a way to create a DIY version of the stylish, but pricey acrylic trays I had been swooning over in all my favorite stores. My tray cost a grand total of $4! And best of all, this year, in under five minutes and for less $1, I was able to give my DIY tray a brand new, updated look with one quick and easy change.

This post contains affiliate links. If you buy something that I recommend, you pay the same price, but I may receive a small commission.

Acrylic trays are HOT right now. I see them in just about every catalog I get in the mail, like these from West Elm and CB2. They are all gorgeous, but with price tags between $30-50, I just couldn’t bring myself to spend the money.

But then, last spring, I bought an acrylic box frame to frame a photo, and as I laid it down to insert he photo, I realized that it looked exactly like an acrylic tray. So, on my next trip to Michaels, I picked up two more acrylic box frames – an 8×10 for $3.99 and an 8.5×11 for $4.99 {you can also find lots of other sizes of acrylic box frames on Amazon}.

The acrylic box frames are intended to stand up right with a photo inside, but with the photo removed, laying down, the frame becomes a great knock-off for a high dollar acrylic tray.

I wanted my tray to have some personality, but I also wanted to be able to update and reimagine it for each holiday or season. I picked a brightly colored piece of 12×12 scrapbook paper from my craft stash.

Since the paper was larger than the 8.5×11″ frame, I needed to cut the paper to size. I laid the tray on top of the paper so that I could decide what portion of the design I wanted to use, then used a pencil to trace the outside of the tray on to the paper and cut it out. {Note that if you want to place paper inside the tray, you should instead trace the cardboard insert that comes with the frame, rather than the tracing the outside of the tray, in order make the paper fit in correctly.}

Because I want to be able to frequently restyle this tray, I simply affixed the paper to the bottom of the tray using a few strips of double sided Scotch tape {one in each corner}.

By placing the paper on the underside of the tray, the paper is protected and will stay looking nice no matter what I put inside the tray.

Back when I created this tray last spring, my intent was to simply pull the paper and tape off of the bottom of the tray and affix a new piece of paper when I was ready to restyle the tray. And this spring, that’s exactly what I did.

I found a piece of scrapbook paper I fell in love, and this time it was an 8.5×11″ sheet, so it was already the perfect size without requiring any cutting. It took me less than a minute to pull of the previous paper and tape the new piece to the frame. But what a change! It gives the tray a whole new look.

Of course, scrapbook paper is just one way you can style a DIY acrylic frame. The options endless!

Last spring, I also created a tray to hold our tv remote and coasters on the coffee table shelf in our living room, and an 8×10 frame was just the right size. I added some gold and teal polka dot stickers.

When I spread out the sheets of polka dots to get an idea of how many would fit on the tray, I realized that the sheet of polka dots worked great as a template for perfectly spacing the dots on the tray.

I laid the tray on top of the teal polka dots and placed the gold polka dots on the tray in line with the dots below.

I mixed in just a few teal polka dots here and there among the gold, and I love the way the tray turned out.

<img decoding="async" alt="DIY gold polka dot acrylic tray for remotes and coasters" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/blueistyle-DIY-Polka-Dot-Acrylic-Tray-For-Remote-Controls.jpg" title="Acrylic trays have become a big trend in recent years, and they range from $30-40 at high end stores.

It tray tucks neatly on the shelf of the coffee table, in between our stacks of art books. {My real art books, collected from museums around the world, have been temporarily replaced with kid-friendly board books about famous artists}.

Less than minutes, less than $5, and the style can be updated anytime. That’s my kind of project!!

Growing up, I didn’t have a middle name, so I used to beg my parents to make my middle name “Artist.” Angela Artist would have had a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Fortunately my parents thought better of it, and instead of making it a legal name change, they got me a set of pencils with that name engraved on them. I still have those pencils, and I still love to paint and draw!

When I was starting to decorate for my spring home tour, the sideboard at the end of the kitchen table felt like it was lacking something, but I didn’t want to spend much money or time, so I grabbed out my paints and five minutes later I had a super simple, cheerful work of art!

Creating your own art is not only a great way to get the perfect piece to tie together your decor, it’s also fun and super budget friendly! And it doesn’t require any special talent or skill to create something awesome. Even the simplest painting can look gorgeous when you put it in a frame!

SUPPLY LIST

This post contains affiliate links. If you buy something that I recommend, you pay the same price, but I may receive a small commission.

Acrylic Paint in your choice of colors {my favorite is Delta Ceramcoat}

Paper {I chose a lightly textured, card stock weight scrapbook paper}

1″ Foam Brushes {best value if you buy them in bulk – I got 25 for $5.50}

Frame {I chose an 11×14 floating frame}

Plastic Plate {used as a paint palate}

Painters Tape

I began by cutting my paper down to the size I wanted to float inside my frame, then I was ready to start painting.

Picked three colors of paint and squeeze out a dab of each onto a plastic plate, close enough together that the overlap just a bit. I started with three shades of pink paint, and put the lightest color in the middle to create the most contrast.

Place the flat side of a foam brush into the paint, ensuring that some of each color will be on the brush. Then drag the foam brush forward to load paint onto it.

Then drag the foam brush across the paper to create a band of all three colors.

Choose three more colors, and use the same method to create another band of color on your paper.

I wanted my painting to tie in all of the vibrant shades of pink, blue, teal, green and yellow that I was using throughout my spring and summer decor, so I continued, adding paint to my plastic plate palate and painting bands of color on my paper.

Continue adding bands of color until your paper is full. Once I finished my painting, I laid it on the table next to some of my other seasonal decor to see how it looked. I love how the colors compliment each other, but the the crisp, modern lines are a nice contrast to the softness of the flowers.

To frame the painting within my floating frame, I just rolled up a small piece of painter’s tape to stick the back of the painting to the back layer of glass, then placed the upper layer of glass on top.

<img decoding="async" alt="Simple and Modern DIY Painting" border="0" src="https://www.blueistyleblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/BlueiStyle-FramingPainting.jpg" title="NO SKILL REQUIRED! You may have noticed that Five Minute Friday took a few week hiatus. Sorry about that! I was overwhelmed with the four furniture makeovers that I was working on for my Drab to Fab collaboration with Rust-Oleum and the Denver Home Show. But Five Minute Friday is back, and I’ve got a great line up of fun and fast projects, including many more projects perfect for spring and summer!
